Since the show’s debut in 2019, The Mandalorian has been a key part of the Star Wars franchise. It offered a different take on some aspects of the series, particularly related to families. Soon after, Disney commissioned a second season for the show. In season 2, we saw the return of a few iconic Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano. Like the first season, fans and critics loved season 2. Additionally, we saw some plot threads continue through The Book of Boba Fett. We’re also expecting to see some aspects of Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. With season 3 on the horizon, there are rumors about The Mandalorian spin-off heading our way!

Previously, during Star Wars Celebration 2022, show creator Jon Favreau teased that a crossover would inevitably happen between all the Star Wars shows. However, given the rumors of a spin-off, it’s likely Disney put these plans on hold. Apparently, Jon Favreau is working with long-time Star Wars producer Dave Filoni to create The Mandalorian spin-off. Currently, it’s unclear what the show’s plot, characters, or even themes will be. According to these rumors, the show is still in early development, so we can’t expect any official news yet.

However, these rumors state that the show’s codename is “Ghost Track 17.” Additionally, it’ll be connected to what fans are calling “the Mandoverse,” although the connection isn’t clear. We don’t even know when it happens! Even so, it’s been clear since 2019 that Disney is keen to expand the MandoVerse. After all, we’ve received a ton of extra content for the show, such as reference books, art books, and even comic series. Baby Yoda has proved a pretty popular toy for the masses as well!

The Mandalorian Spin-Off Plot Details

Of course, the biggest question about a potential The Mandalorian spin-off is what the series will be about. The parent show takes place in the period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. In the series, we’ve seen the Empire’s forces struggle to rise from the ashes of the battle with the Rebellion. This period is something Disney covered with other shows, such as The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming shows Skeleton Crew and Ahsoka. So, it would make sense for each of them to crossover somehow.

However, this isn’t the first proposed spin-off for the MandoVerse. Previously, Disney planned to create a spin-off for Gina Carano’s Cara Dune, who appeared in the show’s first two seasons. It was going to be called Rangers of the New Republic and represented Lucasfilm’s first expansion of the MandoVerse. However, after Gina Carano made several racist Tweets, Disney quickly fired her and plans for a spin-off show. Additionally, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, said they’d never release Rangers but would work the proposed storylines into the mainline show.

Nevertheless, there’s plenty of scope for The Mandalorian spin-off with other characters. In particular, Bo-Katan Kryze could be an interesting character for a spin-off since she seems to be a big part of season 3. Even the actress who plays her, Katee Sackhoff, expressed her interest in doing one!

Star Wars Rebels Sequel

Plus, this wouldn’t be the first time that Disney has created a spin-off of a spin-off. For example, the upcoming show Ahsoka will be a sequel series to Rebels. This was itself a sequel and spin-off of The Clone Wars. So, The Mandalorian spin-off isn’t completely out of the question!

Of course, Disney is still keeping rumors about this spin-off under tight wraps. We shouldn’t expect official confirmation for quite a while, especially since it’s still in early development.

You can watch the first two seasons on Disney+ now, and The Mandalorian season 3 will begin on March 1st, 2023. Disney will release Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew later in 2023.
