Expect to see the complete world of Anne Rice come to life on AMC in the coming years. News this week confirms that the The Lives of the Mayfair Witches has received a series order from AMC. This series will draw from Rice’s haunting trilogy that include the books The Witching HourLasher, and Taltos. The Lives of the Mayfair Witches will be written and executive produced by Esta Spalding and Michelle Ashford. Mark Johnson of Gran Via Productions is also onboard as executive producer. Spalding will also serve as showrunner for The Lives of the Mayfair Witches.

The series is set to air in late 2022, following the premiere of Interview With The Vampire. That Anne Rice adaptation has been in the works for some time now. Jacob Anderson (Game of ThronesDoctor Who) will star in the Interview With the Vampire series as Louis. He is joined by Sam Reid as the vampire Lestat, and Bailey Bass as the child vampire Claudia.

The fact that The Lives of the Mayfair Witches is coming so soon after Interview is likely not by accident. These two series do eventually crossover (albeit to mixed results). It is possible that AMC is setting up that crossover possibility early on, to build a kind of Anne Rice cinematic universe.

The Lives of the Mayfair Witches is a family saga and haunting ghost story that spans generations. However, the first book The Witching Hour focuses mainly on the character of Rowan Mayfair. She is a young and brilliant neurosurgeon who discovers that she comes from an ancient line of witches. When her biological mother dies, Rowan becomes the heir to the family dynasty, as well as the spirit that has haunted and helped the family for centuries.

A Seductive Tale of Magic And Horror

The Lives of the Mayfair Witches has been ordered for an 8 episode season, similar to the format of Interview With the Vampire. With 18 books between the two series, AMC will have plenty of gothic horror on their docket for years to come. And with some of their most popular shows like The Walking Dead finally going off the air in the near future, AMC has landed on the world of Anne Rice as their next hot property.

“The world of witches has fascinated and terrified for centuries. And yet Anne Rice’s particular lens on witches explored something new altogether – women who are powerful, and often brutal. And always committed to subverting our current power structures,” Spalding and Ashford said in a press release. “We are so excited to join our partners AMC and Gran Via Productions in making this mysterious and provocative world come to life.”

We will certainly be keeping a close eye on the casting for The Lives of the Mayfair Witches. I am especially eager to see who will play the main character of Rowan Mayfair. If the casting for Interview With The Vampire is any indication, we are likely to see a more diverse lineup of actors in these roles.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
