The Expanse Will Premiere Season 5 On Amazon Prime In December
It looks like my prediction about season 5 of The Expanse coming in December was correct. There is also a final book on the way in 2021, and a series of graphic novels due for release that will bridge the gap between seasons. The sci-fi show just dropped a trailer for the upcoming season at the virtual New York City Comic-Con. Let’s check it out and see what we know about season 5 of The Expanse.
Based on a long-running series of books by author(s) James S.A. Corey. Season 5 of The Expanse will also adapt the fifth novel of the series – Nemesis Games. The Expanse is a space opera rife with politics and compelling character-driven arcs. There are also some spooky mysteries with the alien protomolecule. Not to mention the strange interstellar portals that have opened across the galaxy. Every season of The Expanse has dramatically raised the stakes for its characters. And the upcoming fifth season is no different.
Season 5 of The Expanse Delves Into Character Backstory
We left season 4 on a cliffhanger, with multiple large asteroids flung towards Earth by a group of revolutionaries led by Naomi’s ex-lover Marco Inaros. Season 5 of The Expanse will deal with this threat, and the repercussions of this act of aggression against Earth. It also promises to delve into Naomi’s backstory, exploring her relationship with Inaros and her quest to find the son – Filip – that he took from her long ago.
Season 5 of The Expanse will also ramp up the political turmoil in the galaxy, that threatens to break into all-out war. The tensions between Earthers, Martians, and Belters have been a constant backdrop to the drama of The Expanse. Now we see a militant rogue faction led by Marcos Inaros who has consolidated all of the stray Belter factions into a ‘free navy.’

The trailer gives us an action-packed look at what season 5 of The Expanse will deliver. Among the character-driven stories is also a closer look at the character of Amos. The preview shows him returning to Earth to take care of some unfinished business. Amos is fan-favorite on the show. His character arc has seen him transform from an apparent sociopath, to a nuanced and complex member of The Rocinante’s crew. His return to Earth will also allow viewers to gain a better understanding of what life is like on the home planet. So far most of the Earth-related storylines have belonged to Avasarala. And revolve around the politics of Earth’s relationship to Mars and the Belt. It will be refreshing to see what Earth is like for everyday civilians in this far-future setting.
Other changes in season 5 seem to indicate that the character of Bobbi Draper will officially join the crew of The Rocinante. Bobbi is another character who has gone through a dramatic character arc since being introduced in season 2. The Martian and ex-marine has thus far primarily interacted with the character of Avasarala. Last season saw her uncovering a Martian weapons conspiracy that will certainly factor into the events of season 5.
The Political Tensions of The Expanse Could Turn Into A Galactic War
Season 5 of The Expanse will also ramp up the political turmoil in the galaxy, that threatens to break into all-out war. The tensions between Earthers, Martians, and Belters have been a constant backdrop to the drama of The Expanse. Now we see a rogue terrorist group led by Marcos Inaros who has consolidated all of the stray Belter factions into a ‘free navy.’
Many of the storylines in previous seasons have revolved around trying to prevent this exact type of conflict. The first season saw Avasarala struggle to prevent a war between Earth and Mars. There was a race to control or destroy the protomolecule, in order to prevent it being used as a weapon. Then there was the conflict over the interstellar gates that popped up, leading to new worlds. Last season saw that political tension come to a breaking point. With Mars and Earth trying to control the gates as the impoverished Belters sought a means of escape and form their own colonies on far-flung planets. With the political tensions in the real world also at an all-time high, The Expanse continues to be timely and pointed about the real-world parallels to their story.
Season 5 of The Expanse Will Arrive on Amazon Prime in December

Amazon famously saved The Expanse after the SyFy channel unceremoniously cancelled the show in 2018. The fourth season dropped all at once in December of 2019 but this year Amazon is taking a different route. The first three episodes of season 5 will arrive on December 16. New episodes will air every Wednesday until the season finale on February 3.
Season 5 of The Expanse will also feature an episode directed by actor Thomas Jane. Although no longer a regular on the series, Jane portrayed the character of Detective Miller in the first four season of The Expanse. Jane directed the third episode of the fifth season of The Expanse which is titled ‘Mother.’
The ninth and final book in The Expanse will arrive in 2021. So fans can rest assured that The Expanse is one of those rare faithful adaptations that knows where it is heading. The first three episodes of The Expanse season 5 will air on Amazon Prime on December 16, 2020. For more genre news be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.
