The Expanse on Amazon Prime Will End After Season Six Without A Major Character

Sad news for sci-fi fans today. Amazon has announced that the sixth season of their hit show The Expanse will be the final season of the show. That means the upcoming fifth season set to premiere in December is the penultimate season. The showrunners also addressed the sexual misconduct allegations against actor Cas Anvar – who plays Alex – by just eliminating the character entirely from the last season. This is disappointing news all around, but maybe the showrunners will be able to end all of this gracefully. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from the final two seasons of The Expanse.

Deadline broke the news with a double-edged sword. Revealing that The Expanse has been renewed for season six but also that it will be the final season. Executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson had this to say about their show.

“From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers. We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”

How Will The Expanse End?

Some spoilers for The Expanse books below!

This is not the first time that The Expanse has been cancelled of course (if cancellation is the correct term to use here). The show first ran on the Syfy network for three seasons before getting the axe. Amazon famously rescued the show after a fan petition, and brought the whole team over to Prime. But now The Expanse is facing an early end once again. The show is due to end with season six, even though there will be nine total books in the series. The final book in the series – Leviathan Falls – is due for release next year.

The Expanse show may find a natural ending point after season six, due to a major time jump that happens in the books. This time jump occurs in book 7: Persepolis Rising. The seventh book takes place 30 years after the events of book 6: Babylon’s Ashes. That type of time jump on television would typically require recasting characters. Or aging them using makeup and special effects. It is entirely possible that Amazon was not interested in recasting the great actors that already play the major roles.

That means that the show will likely focus on the struggle between the Earth, Mars, and the Belter Free Navy that was set up last season. This makes sense, since the seeds of this struggle were planted early on in both the show and the books. This keeps the arc of the characters related to their fight for autonomy from Earth and Mars.

A Major Character Will Not Return For The Final Season of The Expanse

Unfortunately season six will see the loss of one major character in The Expanse. Actor Cas Anvar will not return for the final season, after a string of sexual misconduct accusations last year. When the news broke, I saw many people online petitioning for the character to be re-cast. Actors like Naveen Andrews (LOST) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes) were listed as potential actors to play the role. Honestly, I think either of those choices would have been excellent. Unfortunately Amazon opted not to go with re-casting, and is just eliminating the character of Alex entirely.

This is unfortunate because Alex is a fan-favorite character on the show. However, looking at the book summaries involving his character (sorry I haven’t read all of the books yet) it appears that there might be a natural endpoint for his character coming up in season 5. If that is the case, the show may be able to write Alex off gracefully and make his absence from the final season less glaring.

Season 5 of The Expanse will air on Amazon Prime beginning on December 16, 2020. The upcoming season will adapt the fifth book in the series – Nemesis Games. The first three episodes of season 5 will drop on December 16th, with new episodes airing weekly until the finale on February 3, 2021.

The sixth and final season of The Expanse has not yet begun filming, so we do not yet know when to expect it. But you know we will keep you up to date as we learn more. Follow Comic Years today on Facebook and Twitter for more news.
