The Final Season Of The Expanse Is Coming In December To Amazon Prime
The Rocinante will fly once more, with the final season of The Expanse due to air on Amazon Prime this December. The beloved sci-fi show has had a bit of a bumpy ride over the years. It began on the Syfy channel before being unceremoniously cancelled. Fans successfully petitioned to bring the series back to air, as it switched over to Amazon Prime and got a significant budgetary upgrade.
It seemed that the future of the show was secure, until we learned that the show would be ending well before the adaptation caught up with the end of the books. Now the upcoming sixth season is the last for the show. Interestingly enough, the final season will be somewhat concurrent with the release of the final book in The Expanse series. However, the show itself will only cover up to book six – Babylon’s Ashes.
The Sixth Season Of The Expanse Is Set For December
A new teaser released this week sets a somber tone for the upcoming final season of The Expanse. The narration from the always-excellent Chrisjen Avasarala reminds us how much was lost last season. And how dangerous a threat Marco Inaros truly is to the system.
The fifth season of The Expanse saw the universe brought to the brink of war, with attacks on Earth from the Belter leader Marco Inaros. It was a heavily character-driven season. There was a heavy focus on the character of Naomi Nagat. She was dealing with the ramifications of being the former lover of Marco, and mother of his child. Actress Dominique Tipper delivered a stunning performance last season, one that truly deserves all the awards. And her efforts to reach her son Filip may have been more effective than she thought. As we saw him becoming more disillusioned with his father as season 5 went on.
The show also reintroduced the character of Clarissa Mao last season. And delivered an unexpectedly sweet relationship between her character and the slightly sociopathic Amos. Together they struggled to get off Earth in the aftermath of the attacks. Holden spent much of his time trying to save Naomi (ever the white knight). We also saw more character development for Drummer and her Belter crew. Odds are high that she will have an even larger role in the final season, as this composite character has become a fan favorite.
What Will Become Of The Crew Of The Rocinante?

In season 6, we will see the crew of the Rocinante mostly reunited (with a few new additions). They will team up to work together to thwart Inaros. Will they be able to prevent all-out war? Their efforts may be hindered by a new alien threat. One that has been hinted at for several seasons. Although fans of Babylon’s Ashes may know what is coming, there is still a question of whether or not information from the final book – Leviathan Falls is due out on November 30 – will affect the final season of the show. We will have to wait and see when the final season of The Expanse airs on December 10th, with new episodes following weekly on Amazon Prime.
