Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Trailer Continues To Impress By Homaging Deep Cuts From The Long-Standing Franchise
Star Trek is a franchise that has stood the test of time and is now immortalized in countless forms of media. From TV shows, movies, games, comic books and back to movies all over again, it’s a franchise that can not, will not go away. And rightfully so. Its reinvigoration came from the new Star Trek: Discovery. The Next Generation got a sequel follow-up with Picard. And recent news even broke about WandaVision’s Matt Shakman taking over whatever the next iteration the Star Trek movie will ultimately be. But the coolest new generation of Trek comes from an animated series that homages all the best parts of the franchise. And the new Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 trailer reminds us again why this is such a great show!
Star Trek: Lower Decks Is The In-Canon Star Trek Homage That We Always Wanted

Star Trek is ultimately a serious sci-fi show set in space that embodies the best vision of the future. It’s not post-apocalyptic or desolate but imagines a hopeful and kind version of the future. But creating compelling drama in a world where humanity seems to be in unity, was always the challenge for Star Trek. One that was met and crushed! So what other avenues to go to create more interesting stories set in the same universe? Creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks answered that question, by not looking outward into other species, and bigger world-ending threats, but by looking at the inner workings of the Federation. And so he found a great source of comedy within.
What Office Space did by taking a setting like Michael Douglas’ Wall Street, and focusing on the smaller, less high-power employees of a corporate setting, Lower Decks does with Star Trek. Mike McMahan tells the story of a crew within a Starship in Starfleet, that isn’t the most special, or prominent, but just an average one. And focuses on the lesser crew of that ship, the technicians, the second-tier members, and highlights their struggles within the hierarchy and constant misadventures they happen to find themselves in. It’s freakin’ hilarious!
How Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Trailer Homages All Of Star Trek

On paper, you can write off Star Trek: Lower Decks as a surface-level satire of Star Trek. But it’s so much more. The jokes are based on a snippet of a scene, from an obscure episode of an even obscure season of one of its many shows. And when hardcore Trek fans can identify exactly where it comes from, it’s such a wonderful feeling. That level of attention to detail and recall of Trek content is nothing short of admirable.
Even some of the characters of Lower Decks feel like templates of classic Star Trek characters. Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell) as the handsome and charming second in command is obviously a William Riker archetype. Ensign Samanthan Rutherford is an amalgamation of Geordi Laforge and Data. While one of the leads from Jack Quaid’s Brad Boimler is basically an over-eager Will Crusher. The cameos from actors from all over Star Trek also make this show extremely nostalgic and a lot of fun. And it seems like the cameos aren’t stopping either, given the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 trailer.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Trailer Brings The Funny

The Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 trailer looks all kinds of fun. The trailer opens with a hilarious joke from The Original Series with Kirk, and it legit made me laugh out loud. Literally. The inside references continue as season 2 sees the ship have a lot of new adventures. We get to see the same season 1 characters such as Tawny Newsome’s lead Beckett Mariner. The quick sizzle reel of images seems to promise interactions between our Lower Decks crew and the Borg, Ferengi, Nausicaans and many more, even newer aliens, it seems like. The sequences are hilarious, exciting and very surprising. Especially the cameo by Robert Duncan McNeil as Tom Paris. While the scene looks more like a hallucination by Boimler, it’s still a cool throwback to Star Trek: Voyager.
Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres on Paramount+ on August 12.
