The bestselling fantasy series Shadow and Bone is coming to Netflix in April, and a new trailer shows off the impressive fantasy world. The new show is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, and will incorporate elements from all five books. The trailer released by Netflix focuses heavily on the events of the first book, the titular Shadow and Bone.

The Shadow and Bone Trailer Gives Us A New Fantasy World

A synopsis from Netflix tells us the following about Shadow and Bone.

In Shadow and Bone, in a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.

The trailer for Shadow and Bone shows off the magical barrier known as the Dark Fold, along with the inciting incident that starts the story. Newcomer Jesse Mei Li will play the main character of Alina, who discovers magical abilities that will transform the world around her. Ben Barnes (Westworld, The Punisher) will play the character of the Darkling, a powerful ancient being that takes Alina under his wing.

Shadow and Bone is one of many book adaptations that Netflix has picked up in recent years. Alongside shows like The Witcher, this is a series that could make Netflix a serious contender in the fantasy genre. And we are pleasantly surprised to see how good this show looks. The CGI is excellent, the acting seems strong (at least from the trailer), the world looks immersive and realistic. And the complex relationships between the characters make this series far more than your typical YA fantasy fare.

The Shadow and Bone series will premiere on Netflix on April 23, 2021. For more genre news and reviews, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
