When we first learned that Rick Riordan’s beloved young adult series starring demigod Percy Jackson would be getting a Disney+ series, fans were excited, but maybe also a little tentative. Two movies based off of the series were released in 2010 (Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief) and 2013 (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters), and both did not do well, both at the box office and with the fanbase. However, Riordan himself went on Twitter to announce the upcoming series and said that “Becky (his wife) and I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.” Earlier this year, Riordan gave fans an update, saying that while things had been delayed a bit, the Percy Jackson series was still a go. He went on to say that they were currently in the process of looking for the perfect director to make sure that the series stayed true to the story and characters. Well, it might be time to celebrate because Riordan announced that Percy Jackson Disney+ has a director: James Bobin, a British film director, writer, and producer.

Riordan had previously outlined several major points for his “perfect” director and it seems like Bobin fits the bill really well. One point was a director who would be willing and able to work with young actors and Bobin’s resume includes The Muppets, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and most recently, Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Another important point was that the potential director be familiar with the Percy Jackson series, which Bobin also checks off. The author said:

“James knows the Percy books well. His kids are fans. His humor is wonderful. We are in good hands, demigods, and lucky to have him joining our team. Keep your fingers crossed that everything goes the way we expect!”

Another point that Riordan had noted was that he wanted someone that Disney would be excited and happy to work with. Besides Bobin’s aforementioned works, he’s also directed an episode of the Disney+ series The Mysterious Benedict Society, so it’s probably safe to say that Bobin and Disney will get along just fine.

There’s no release date for the Percy Jackson Disney+ series, but given that there’s a director now, it shouldn’t be much longer until we learn more details!

What do you think of the Percy Jackson Disney+ director? Do you think James Bobin will do the young adult series justice? Let us know in the comments below!
