The Peacemaker Official Trailer Gives Us A More Nuanced Look At The Complicated ‘Pacifist’
The HBO Max series about The Suicide Squad‘s favorite douchebag is one of the most highly anticipated shows on the streaming platform. While it won’t be available until January of next year, the Peacemaker official trailer just dropped and viewers got a more in-depth look at the fanatical pacifist. After his appearance in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker (played by John Cena) quickly became the one character we loved to hate: he wasn’t a team player and his harshly hilarious one-liners were entertaining, but there was also something very endearing about him. Well, I feel like I got a better understanding of the DC anti-hero because the Peacemaker official trailer gave us a more nuanced view of the guy.

Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker became obsessed with peace and enforcing it due to a fraught relationship with his Nazi father, something that we caught a glimpse of in both the teaser trailer and this official trailer. Similar to many fans, even the other characters in the trailer can’t really pin him down. Police detective Sophie Song calls him a “trained killer” and a “maniac” while someone else says he’s a “clown.” The Leota Adebayo character puts it succinctly when she says, “But there’s something about him that’s…sad,” which I think is part of the whole appeal of Peacemaker. He’s trying to live life the best way he knows how despite struggling with personal relationships and his own lack of confidence in himself.
His father (played by Robert Patrick) is a bitter old asshole and treats his son like crap, which has had a huge influence on Peacemaker’s self-esteem. I mean, the guy asks his son why he let someone shoot at him for crying out loud! However, the team that Peacemaker is working with seem like they will play an integral role in helping him along.
There are the no-nonsense, all business characters who rescued him at the end of The Suicide Squad (Clemson Murn, played by Chukwudi Iwuji; Emilia Harcourt, played by Jennifer Holland; and John Economos, played by Steve Agee. Then there’s Leota Adebayo (played by Danielle Brooks), who seems to form a tentative, but tenuous, relationship with Peacemaker. Lastly, there’s Adrian Chase/Vigilante, played by Freddie Stroma. He fills the role of the goofy and adorably dumb superhero who can make friends with anyone. While they seem to hate each other at first, ultimately it appears that Peacemaker will find true friendship after all. Gunn can produce some of the most touching moments in the weirdest of scenes, so I’m looking forward to where the series goes.
Peacemaker will be eight episodes total, with the first three episodes airing on January 13, 2022. After that, one episode will premiere weekly through February 17. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directed five, including the first episode. He is serving as executive producer on the series, along with Peter Safran and Matt Miller. Cena will act as co-executive producer. The series is produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.
