While some television projects related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe are one and done affairs, sometimes they take on a life of their own. Should that happen, the projects tend to get follow-ups, although that depends significantly on audience engagement. That seems to be the case with the Moon Knight second season. If you believe Ethan Hawke, it seems as though season 2 of Moon Knight mightn’t happen.

That’s primarily because, as the actor believes, everything comes down to how an audience engages with the show. He notes that he’s seen it happen with multiple other shows, both Marvel and non-Marvel. With the MCU looking to expand its superhero count, however, it’s possible that the character himself could still pop up, even if he’s not in his own show.

Over the past several years, several MCU-related shows were released. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may be the most notable of these; despite finishing several years ago, it’s the longest-lasting show related to the overall franchise. Loki also stands out for having a second season officially confirmed.

That doesn’t mean that a Moon Knight second season is likely, however. Both The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and WandaVision, despite being significant hit series, served as one and done affairs. Ethan Hawke is well aware of that. Speaking to IGN, he highlights how the possibility of season 2 of Moon Knight hinges on how the first season is received.

He notes how the show could serve as both an introduction and a longer affair. As he says:

“The good news is that it’s possibly both. It lives and breathes on its own merits, it functions as a limited series — and if people are engaged and excited by it then it could be the origin story of a larger thing.”

Hawke elaborates that he’d be more than happy to return to the show as the titular character, although it being a “limited series” could be true at the same time.

That means that the second season of the show mightn’t happen. That may be a blessing in disguise, however. Despite receiving a significant amount of hype ahead of its release later this month, the show still hasn’t aired. As such, it’s unclear whether audiences will want to engage with it enough to warrant season two.

Regardless of whether that happens, however, it’s also possible that the character could turn up in the MCU itself. Depending on reception, that could be exactly what fans might want.

Moon Knight starts airing on Disney+ on March 30th.

It serves as the characters first introduction to mainstream audiences and follows a mild-mannered Steven Grant, who has a dissociative identity disorder that leads him to become the titular character.

Are you looking forward to the show? Do you think a Moon Knight second season is a possibility. Instead of season 2 of Moon Knight, would you rather see the character appear in a movie? Let us know in the comments below!
