Although we’re still in the middle of the Crisis on Infinite Earths–check our coverage–there are still surprises in store for the gal from Krypton. We’ve learned this week that Thomas Lennon will be coming to The CW to play Mister Mxyzptlk on Supergirl. Gesundheit. Here’s everything we know about that darned trickster and his upcoming run.
Who is Thomas Lennon?
Gen X-ers, Xennials, and millennials have long known Lennon since his time as a member of The State, the improv group that had a show of the same name on MTV in the mid-90s. After MTV canceled The State, Lennon went on to create Viva Variety on Comedy Central with a few other former State members. Lennon and two of those members, Kerri Kenney and Robert Ben Garant, later created the series Reno 911!, also on Comedy Central. (As nothing ever dies, that show is coming back next year on Quibi. Let us all commence our new boot goofin’.)
Besides appearing in his own work, Lennon has been successful in other people’s. He has a long list of credits in movies and TV, and was the co-lead, with Matthew Perry, in CBS’s 2015 reboot of The Odd Couple. Along with his on-camera work, he’s built a steady career behind the scenes, as a screenwriter and script doctor. He’s also the author of the Ronan Boyle YA fantasy series.
And He’s Also the Future Mister Mxyzptlk on Supergirl
If you’re a regular viewer, then you already know that Mister Mxyzptlk last graced our screens on Supergirl back in season 2. Back then, Peter Gadiot played him. As Mister Mxyzptlk is a well-known prankster with the ability to shape-shift, though, having a different actor won’t be a problem. In season 2, Gadiot’s Mxyzptlk, or “Mxy,” as he was known, tried to woo Kara Danvers, or at least trick her into marriage. With Thomas Lennon’s Mxyzptlk and his reappearance, though, there’s no telling what that scamp will do.
As comic book readers know, Mister Mxyzptlk, an imp from the 5th dimension–ooh, I love their music–has a long history with the Superfamily. Put simply, he’s a pest. Mxyzptlk can change reality, which he likes to do in colorful and surprising ways. Sometimes his shenanigans are merely irksome, but over the years, they’ve often been serious. Most of the time, though, he’s just annoying. So it’ll be interesting to see how he gets Kara’s goat this time. Knowing him, it might literally be with a goat.
Are you looking to seeing Mister Mxyzptlk on Supergirl? Or are you too riveted by the Crisis on Infinite Earths right now to focus on anything else? Let us know in the comments below or on social media. Definitely don’t spell your name backwards, especially if you’re an interdimensional imp.
