Fans have been eagerly awaiting the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop for some years now. Production has been delayed several times due to the pandemic, and also because of cast injuries onset. They recently announced that the series had wrapped production back in March of 2021. So now the wait is almost over. This week Netflix announced that the live-action Cowboy Bebop will premiere this Fall.

Original Composer Yoko Kanno Returns To Cowboy Bebop

The streaming network also released a brief tease of the series on Twitter. This short video features some of the actors from the show. It also confirms the return of Yoko Kanno, the original composer for the animated series. This is exciting news, since the music of Cowboy Bebop is so integral to setting the tone for the show.

Based on the hit anime series of the same name, the new Cowboy Bebop will star John Cho as space cowboy Spike Spiegel. He will be joined by his ragtag crew that will feature Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Alex Hassell as Vicious.

Together this group of bounty hunters will roam space and look extremely cool while doing so. The original anime series was a genre-bending adventure that drew heavily from Westerns, as well as Noir. It will be interesting to see how Netflix reimagines this iconic pastiche of styles for live-action. But at least we know the music will be on point.

The showrunners for Cowboy Bebop are André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner, who have teamed up in the past on shows like Alias. Pinkner has also had success with modern sci-fi classics like Fringe and Lost. Alex Garcia Lopez joins Cowboy Bebop as a director. Garcia Lopez has also directed a number of popular series adaptations for Netflix including Daredevil, The Punisher, and The Witcher.

We don’t have a set release date for the live-action Cowboy Bebop series on Netflix quiet yet. But we’ll be sure to report any news we learn in the coming months. Be sure to stay tuned to Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today, to stay up to date on all the latest genre news.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
