Lena Headey To Star In Adaptation Of Hugh Howey’s Beacon 23 On AMC
One of our genre queens is heading back to television! Reports indicate that Lena Headey will star in an adaptation of sci-fi novel Beacon 23 by Hugh Howey. Headey will play the main character of Aster. “A woman who mysteriously finds her way to a lonely beacon keeper on his lighthouse in the darkest recesses of space.” Katherine Pope of Spectrum Originals will be the showrunner for the series that is set to air on AMC.

The series is being created by Zak Penn, one of the screenwriters for The Avengers. The story is described as “an intimate, suspenseful thriller follows two people whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together at the end of the known universe. A tense battle of wills unfolds at the edge of space. Halan, the beacon keeper, begins to question whether Aster is friend or foe. As her ability to disguise her agenda and motives could make her a formidable opponent.”
Hugh Howey rose to fame as the author of the self-published Silo series, and has written many sci-fi novels since then. Beacon 23 came out in 2015, and apparently there was little question as to who should play the complex character of Aster. According to Katherine Pope: “We had exactly one person in mind when thinking about who could play Aster – who could bring the strength, the vulnerability and the brilliance to Zak’s complex character? No one but Lena Headey.”

Lena Headey is of course an established genre veteran at this point. She delivered a career-defining performance as Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones. But Headey has also been acting in genre roles her entire career. Among her notable genre credits include shows like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Where she portrayed the role of Sarah Connor made famous by Linda Hamilton. (Fun fact: Emilia Clarke was also in a Terminator movie. This means two of the most notable queens from Game of Thrones are part of the Terminator universe.)
Since the (controversial) series finale of Game of Thrones, Headey has kept a low profile. She lent her unmistakable voice to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and the upcoming Masters of the Universe series, both for Netflix. And her next film Twist is a retelling of the famous Oliver Twist novel by Charles Dickens. Beacon 23 will mark Headey’s return to a starring role in a television show. It will be interesting to see Headey in space, as a significant departure from the fantasy realms that she previously inhabited.
No other cast members have been announced yet, including the other main character of Halan the lighthouse keeper. But we will certainly be keeping an eye on this project as it develops. To stay up to date on all of your genre news, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
