The Legend Of Vox Machina Cast Adds Many Stars To The Critical Role Animated Series
The story about the rise of The Legend Of Vox Machina animated series is as heartwarming as it is endearing. It was a Dungeons & Dragons campaign between friends that became a worldwide sensation. The original Critical Role cast was that group of friends portraying all the main characters. But all of the other supporting characters, or non-player characters as it’s called in the game, were done by creator Matthew Mercer. With the game now becoming a full-fledged fictional show, the Critical Role animated series cast needed to be more than just a one-man show. And thus, the creators rallied some amazing talent to make up The Legend Of Vox Machina cast. And honestly, there are some heavy hitters here, further creating anticipation for an already highly-anticipated series.
The Critical Role Cast Comprised Of The Small Group Of Original Players

Before The Legend Of Vox Machina, the story of this D&D campaign focused on eight main players playing their own characters. Those same characters will now appear in the animated series with the original cast members returning to voice them. The original Critical Role cast featured Travis Willingham, Taliesin Jaffe, Laura Bailey, Marisha Ray, Liam O’Brien, Sam Riegel and Ashley Johnson. All the same actors are also part of The Legend Of Vox Machina cast.
Mercer himself was instrumental to the entire success of the game. On top of being COO of the Critical Role company, he is also executive producing the new series. But among his many roles, the ones of note here is how Mercer did all the voices of the hordes of other supporting and one-off characters that populated the fictional world of Exandria that he created. Mercer’s range is incredible as he absolutely enhanced the world by bringing those characters to life. However, for the animated show, Mercer took a step back and allowed other voice actors to bring their unique takes to these characters. A new video released shows the original cast discussing the new additions to The Legend Of Vox Machina cast. Especially the ones taking over for Mercer in the supporting roles.

A new featurette from Critical Role’s YouTube channel gives us a glimpse into the cast of the Critical Role animated series. It’s an amazing deep dive into the animated show, with the original cast swooning over some of the talent. It’s endearing seeing some of them being very excited about working with some of these stars. And I gotta say, these names are legitimately some of the greatest actors in geek fandom. Along with the original Critical Role cast, they are joined by Felicia Day in what could be a cameo. Day’s inclusion in the cast of the animated series is important because it was her web series that first featured the game to a streaming audience. It’s that transition to streaming that resulted in the game’s massive success, leading to the animated series’ conception.
After Day, The Legend Of Vox Machina cast also includes Khary Payton from The Walking Dead and Tony Hale from Veep-fame. They’ve also got some Game Of Thrones alums in the show like Indira Varma and the Hound himself, Rory McCann. And the star of the hugely successful Encanto, Stephanie Beatriz also joins this cast in the role of a badass warrior. Jessica Jones’s David Tennant plays a General who actually was only in the game before it became a live-play stream. Other names that are part of The Legend Of Vox Machina cast are Dominic Monaghan (Lord Of The Rings), Mason Alexander Park (Cowboy Bebop), Max Mittleman (One Punch Man), Gina Torres (Firefly), Stephen Root (The Book Of Boba Fett), Grey Griffin (Invincible) and so many more.
The Cast Of This Critical Role Animated Series Boosts Accessibility To The Show

While the Critical Role game might have been for a niche tabletop gaming audience only, the animated show isn’t. Animated shows have gone from being a niche to a very mainstream idea. Especially adult animated shows like Amazon Prime Video’s previous success, Invincible. The Legend Of Vox Machina cast includes many high calibre stars from other fandoms. Which instantly brings a level of interest and accessibility to the show from general audiences.
Not to mention that the series very much looks like a fantasy, LOTR-inspired adventure. But with the R-rated qualities that the more mainstream franchises shy away from. In that aspect, the show is definitely something that I’m looking forward to. Elves and Dwarves impaling monsters with magic and dry sardonic humour is a genre I didn’t know I wanted. Until now.
The Legend Of Vox Machina premieres on Amazon Prime Video on January 28, 2022.
