The upcoming Willow television series on Disney+ has found a new director in Jonathan Entwistle. This comes after the news that Jon M. Chu was stepping away from the production due to bad timing and personal reasons. Entwistle will fill the role after running two successful shows on Netflix – The End of the F***ing World and I Am Not Okay With This. He joins showrunners Wendy Mericle and Jonathan Kasdan. He will also be listed alongside executive producers Ron Howard and Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm. Willow is set to be the first non-Star Wars television show from Lucasfilm on Disney+. Although we still don’t know when it will arrive.

Jonathan Entwistle joins Willow Series On Disney+

Entwistle comes to Disney+ from Netflix where he developed two distinct TV series that were both critically acclaimed. The End of the F***ing World and I’m Not Okay With This were both based on a series of alternative comics by Charles Forsman. The two shows mirrored one another, and took place in the same world. The End of the F***ing World went on to win a prestigious Peabody award in 2019. Outside of these shows, Entwistle is actually still relatively unknown. His only other main project coming up is yet another Power Rangers reboot… which is a choice. Given that he will be working with a cast of relatively unknown actresses as well, it will be interesting to see a fresh youthful take on an older franchise.

“With its epic world of swords, sorcery and adventure, Willow captivated and influenced so many,” Entwistle said about the news. “I’m excited to be going on this journey. And working with Jon and Wendy to create something that is both deeply rooted in that original film. also a fresh, funny and charming addition to the beloved story. To be able to play within the world so painstakingly crafted by Ron back in ’88 is a dream come true for me.”

Willow Will Be A Sequel To The Original Film

The upcoming Willow series is a sequel to the Ron Howard film from the 1980’s starring Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley. The only actor from the original film returning (that we know of) is Warwick Davis in the titular role. Although details on the plot are scarce, we do know that it is set to be a female-fronted series. Casting is already underway on the upcoming Willow series, with a number of women filling the lead roles. So far young actresses Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaeny, and Erin Kellyman have been cast as the series leads. Willow is set to begin filming in a few months during the Spring of 2021.

We will certainly be keeping an eye on this Willow series as it continues to develop. To stay up to date, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
