JJ Abrams Bringing John Constantine Series To HBO Max, Matt Ryan Not Involved
As part of his new Warner Bros. deal, JJ Abrams will bring a series based on DC Comics’ mage John Constantine to HBO Max. That’s the good news. The bad news, for some fans of Constantine, is that neither Keanu Reeves nor Matt Ryan will play him.
The character of John Constantine, star of the Hellblazer comic series, evolved over the years. He began as an effete arcane con-man in Alan Moore’s Saga of the Swamp Thing. He first came to live-action in the film Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves as an American take on the character. Then Matt Ryan picked up the character for a 13-episode run on NBC, in a show also called Constantine. While the show didn’t last long, fans loved his portrayal of a very comics-accurate version of the character. Eventually, Ryan reprised the role on Arrow and then on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. He also voiced the character in a number of animated projects, including in the larger DC shared universe of animated films.

Constantine is also rumored to appear in the Netflix series Sandman, though he was not announced with the rest of the cast. We also know that JJ Abrams is building towards a Justice League Dark series on HBO Max, of which this new Constantine show will likely lead into. All we know is that British novelist Guy Bolton will write the pilot. Also, producers are reportedly hoping to cast an actor of color in the title role, according to THR.com. Hopefully, DC fans will not be jagoffs about this, especially since the DC multiverse means Matt Ryan’s John Constantine isn’t going anywhere.
Even though we all agree that Matt Ryan is great in the role, which actors would you like to see get to take their shot at John Constantine?
