The streaming wars continue, with networks competing to obtain rights to popular novels for adaptation. NBC’s streaming network Peacock premiered with an adaptation of Brave New World. They are also working on (yet another) reboot of Battlestar Galactica. Now Peacock has also picked up the rights to The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. The first novel Jade City came out in 2017 from Orbit Books. Followed by Jade War, as well as the upcoming Jade Legacy. Let’s take a look at what we know about this exciting fantasy series, and how it will play out as a television show.

An Asian Inspired Fantasy World

The first book in the Green Bone Saga is described as ‘Godfather-esque.’ Replete with feuding families and ‘vicious politics.’ In this world jade is highly coveted, and the mineral can give some people special powers. Competing clans struggle to control the supply. Author Fonda Lee won the World Fantasy Award in 2018 for Jade City.

A synopsis from Orbit Books tells us the following about Jade City, the first book in the series.

The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. It’s the only place in the world that produces rare magical jade, which grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities.

The Green Bone clans of honorable jade-wearing warriors once protected the island from foreign invasion–but nowadays, in a bustling post-war metropolis full of fast cars and foreign money, Green Bone families like the Kauls are primarily involved in commerce, construction, and the everyday upkeep of the districts under their protection.

When the simmering tension between the Kauls and their greatest rivals erupts into open violence in the streets, the outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of Kekon itself.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
