It feels like only yesterday that we were eagerly anticipating the premiere of His Dark Materials on HBO. Now the hit fantasy series has begun filming its third and final season, according to a press release. His Dark Materials is an ongoing adaptation of the Philip Pullman fantasy trilogy of the same name.  The third season will adapt the final book of the original trilogy: The Amber Spyglass.

His Dark Materials Will End With Adaptation of The Amber Spyglass

The Amber Spyglass is the most ambitious book of the original His Dark Materials trilogy, and also the most adult. It will follow both Lyra and Will as they grow and mature from children into teenagers. Along the way, their relationship will also evolve and change. They will be dealing with some heavy issues in the final season of the show. The Amber Spyglass delves deeply into Lord Asriel’s war against God. Our young characters will literally go through hell, and traverse multiple worlds in order to uncover the truth behind the mysterious Dust.

The executive producer of His Dark Materials – Jane Tranter – says of the third and final season that: “This season is both an epic adventure and a story about love and truth.”

James McAvoy Returns For The Third and Final Season of His Dark Materials

Filming for the third and final season of His Dark Materials began on May 24, according to the BBC. Returning cast members include Dafne Keene as Lyra Silvertongue; Amir Wilson as her new universe-hopping friend Will, Ruth Wilson as Lyra’s complicated mother Marisa Coulter, Simone Kirby as nun turned physicist Mary Malone, Will Keen as the treacherous Father McPhail), Jade Anouka as the witch Ruta Skadi, and Ruta Gedminstas as the witch queen Serafina Pekkala. Season 3 will also finally see the return of James McAvoy as Lyra’s father Lord Asriel.

James McAvoy is one of the biggest stars in His Dark Materials. However, many fans were upset when he was nowhere to be found in season 2. There was a standalone episode planned last season that was going to explore what Asriel was up to during the events of The Subtle Knife. Unfortunately, that episode was never filmed due to the lockdown imposed by the pandemic. Here’s hoping that we will get to see that story play out in season 3.

Asriel is one of the most important characters in The Amber Spyglass, since so much of the story revolves around his personal mission. We are excited to see this venerated genre actor returning to the series in an expanded role.

According to Deadline: there are some new cast members joining for season 3 of His Dark Materials. Among these new faces are Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Suicide Squad) as Commander Ogunwe; Jamie Ward (Tyrant) as Father Gomez; Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Justice League), Simon Harrison (No Man’s Land), and Chipo Chung (Into the Badlands) are the rebel angels Balthamos, Baruch, and Xaphania. Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe will play Ama.

Season 2 of His Dark Materials was a bit of an uneven journey, but we have high hopes for the third and final season. We look forward to how weird the show is going to get before the end. And we are excited to see these new cast members, as well as the return of James McAvoy.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
