Halo TV Show Will Now Air on Paramount Plus

What a long, strange trip the Halo TV show took to get to this point. After years of speculation, we learned it was actually happening in the past couple of years. Now, the network that served as its home isn’t even getting to air the show. Even more interestingly, Showtime isn’t all that sad to lose the series to another platform. There’s a lot to break down here, but the fact of the matter is we’re still getting the show. Nobody can take that away from us. Still, it’s easy to be cautiously optimistic about what the final product of the series might be. Either way, the Halo TV show won’t air on Showtime, but rather Paramount Plus in a weird turn of events. Here’s how we got here.

It never felt like the Halo series fit into the Showtime ecosystem. The premium network doesn’t necessarily do much with the space and sci-fi genres. Fantasy, sure. Video game adaptation of a military shooter with aliens and ancient races? Ehh, probably not so much. The show will instead end up on Paramount Plus, a network with no real identity whatsoever. Per Gamespot, Showtime is losing the series to Paramount Plus with The Man Who Fell to Earth moving vice versa.

Showtime and Paramount Plus can make this sort of move because they’re both ViacomCBS networks. Of course, CBS All Access rebranded as Paramount Plus this March but doesn’t have a bonafide hit yet. This level of production, which is still handled by Showtime, might be the hit it needs. Of all the video game TV adaptations we want to see, Halo definitely ranks up there. It’s ideally going to be a detailed, deeper dive into the already great story of the Halo universe. A Showtime Halo TV Series event earlier this year showed us a glimpse of Master Chief, the main military hero in the franchise. We’ll likely get a look at the events of the first game but in a new light. From what Showtime execs say about the project, it’s not just going to be all action either.

Gary Levine, Showtime Networks’ Co-President of Entertainment, said in 2018 that the series “will definitely satisfy the fans of Halo and I think also satisfy the drama audiences of Showtime.” Does a move to Paramount Plus change that approach? Not at all. Showtime spent seven years developing the series and still runs things creatively. Other Co-President of Entertainment Jana Winograde explained recently that “the truth is that it was always a bit of an outlier for us in terms of its fit in the Showtime universe.”

If the show does well, then fans will be happy. Paramount Plus will be happy too, but a second season will require new showrunners. Both Stephen Kane and Kyle Killen, who co-ran the first season’s production, left following final shoots. With the recent announcement of the Halo Infinite release date, it’d be exciting to learn about the premiere of the series. Like most things with the Halo TV show, however, Paramount Plus and ViacomCBS will likely take their time with the announcement.
