With all of the upcoming prequels based on Game of Thrones history, I had completely forgotten about the upcoming Dunk & Egg series. But HBO is moving ahead with this smaller and more intimate story based in Westeros. Whether or not they will remain true to the source material, or make it as dark and gritty as the original series remains to be seen. The new writer for the series might have some sway over the direction of the narrative. The GOT prequel Dunk & Egg has found its writer in Steven Conrad.

Conrad is the scribe behind films like The Pursuit of Happyness and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  While the latter film does have some fantastical elements, none of his work screams Game of Thrones to me. It’s honestly kind of a baffling decision? He does have some experience working in television, writing for shows like Perpetual Grace and Ultra City Smiths.

Dunk & Egg is a series of novellas that author George R.R. Martin has written over the years instead of finishing the original Game of Thrones series. It takes place 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice & Fire. The stories follows Ser Duncan the Tall – future commander of the Kingsguard. He is in loyal service to one of the many Targaryens named Aegon –  the titular “Egg” of the story. This one is Aegon V – the Unlikely. Egg is also the younger brother of Aemon Targaryen – who becomes Maester of the Night’s Watch in the original Game of Thrones series.

There Are Several Novellas To Adapt

There are three novellas that follow the characters of Dunk & Egg that the series can draw upon. The Hedge KnightThe Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. These stories were collected in the volume A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And since GRRM can’t be bothered to finish ASOIF he has promised that there more stories about Dunk & Egg to come.

Several of these stories delve into history that was only hinted at in the original Game of Thrones series. Notably, the stories all take place in the aftermath of the Blackfyre rebellion and go further into detail about that era of history.

There is no casting announced yet for Dunk & Egg, and the series is still in early development. With the addition of Steven Conrad as a writer and executive producer for the Dunk & Egg series, we should expect to hear more news about this GOT prequel soon.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
