Apple TV+ Launches Trailer For Asimov’s Foundation Adaptation Due In September
It has been some time since we learned about the upcoming adaptation of the legendary Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. Set to air on Apple TV+, the Foundation series was also one of my top 5 anticipated shows for 2021. Now it looks like it will be one of the few shows from my list to actually premiere this year. Apple TV released a trailer today, along with a release date for Foundation set for September 24, 2021. Let’s take a look at the trailer, and what we know about this new sci-fi series.
The Foundation Series On Apple TV+ Gets A Trailer
Foundation is based on the books of the same name by beloved classic science fiction author Isaac Asimov. The series covers the fall of a massive galactic empire over the course of centuries. And the efforts of a single man – Hari Seldon, played here by Jared Harris (The Expanse)– to stop the looming darkness. Seldon predicts the death of the empire through his study of ‘psychohistory’ and mathematics. In the trailer, we see him dramatically warning the government of impending doom. “You can’t save yourselves,” he says. “But you can save your legacy.”
The Legacy Of A Galactic Empire

The legacy of the empire greatly concerns the man at the top: the Emperor himself. Played here by everyone’s favorite fantasy elf King: Lee Pace (The Hobbit). We see an older version of him in a room full of tanks with infants growing inside. The Emperor has maintained control on the Empire by repeatedly cloning himself over the years. He muses on how strange it is to watch yourself be born. He claims that his empire has brought peace to the galaxy. However, this statement that is undercut by shots of ruined worlds and impoverished peoples. But this might be the last time the Emperor is cloned, as that peace is certifiably unlikely to last.
It looks like the series adaptation of Foundation will focus on the conflict between the Emperor and Seldon in the first season. The show is drawing source material from some of the Foundation prequels for the series. As a result, the adaptation is amping up the action that was not as prevalent in the extremely philosophical books.
The Epic Scope of the Foundation

The trailer for the upcoming Foundation series on Apple TV+ looks extremely promising. The epic scope of the galactic empire covers many worlds, and we get to see a few of them in the trailer. There is also some exciting space action, something Apple TV+ has already demonstrated that it can do well in shows like For All Mankind. The cast is full of veteran genre actors who will bring the gravitas necessary for this important science fiction novel as it comes to life onscreen.
Foundation will premiere on Apple TV+ on September 24, 2021. Keep an eye out for our review in the Fall, and in the meantime stay tuned to Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter for all of the latest genre news.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
