Game of Thrones Prequel “House of the Dragon” Adds Fabien Frankel To Its All-Star Cast
The cast for the Game of Thrones prequel – House of the Dragon – is stacking up, with news that actor Fabien Frankel has been cast in a major role. Frankel will play Ser Criston Cole, a skilled Dornish swordsman. According to the histories of Westeros, Cole is the dedicated champion of Rhaenyra Targaryen – played by Emma D’arcy. The two appear to have a complicated relationship that goes from friends to enemies. Ser Criston eventually ends up supporting Rhaenyra’s half-brother Aegon for the throne in the infamous Dance of the Dragons that will be depicted in the series.

Author George R.R. Martin actually announced the Frankel’s casting news on his blog, with an introduction to the character.
” is the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven. He has no claim to lands or titles, all he has is his honor and his skill with sword and lance… A challenger, a champion, cheered by the commons, beloved of the ladies. He is a lover (or is he?), a seducer (or is he?), a betrayer (or is he?), a breaker of hearts and a maker of kings.”
Fabien Frankel one of the few unknown actors in the impressive ensemble cast for House of the Dragon. The prequel will see many genre veterans appearing as figures from Westeros history. Most of the Targaryens who make up the titular House of the Dragon have been cast. First we have Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) playing the role of Viserys Targaryen. Then there is Matt Smith (Doctor Who) who will play Daemon Targaryen – the ‘Rogue Prince.’
We’ve also got Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) onboard as Alicent Hightower – Queen of Westeros. Rhys Ifans (Elementary) will play her father – Otto Hightower. Sonoya Mizuno (Devs) is Rhaenrya’s ‘mistress of whispers’ – a role similar to what Varys did in Game of Thrones.
Steve Toussaint (Small Axe) will bring Lord Corlys Velaryon to life. He is husband to Rhaenys Targaryen – played by Eve Best (Fate: The Winx Saga). Not to be confused with Rhaenyra – even though they certainly will be – because there are going to be quite a few overlapping or similar names in this show.

I remember the early days of Game of Thrones when the most famous actor in the original cast was Sean Bean. It is certainly true that Bean’s star power and genre legacy from The Lord of the Rings pulled in a lot of viewers. But now years after the end of Game of Thrones, we are looking at several spin-off shows. It is a mark of how successful Game of Thrones was to see how many A-List actors are signing up for the prequels.
House of the Dragon is one of several Game of Thrones spin-off shows currently in the works at HBO. Alongside this series are several other projects including a show centered around the Flea Bottom area of King’s Landing. There is also a series planned that would focus on Lord Corlys Velaryon in 9 Voyages, which could very likely see actor Steve Toussaint reprise his role from House of the Dragon.
House of the Dragon is being helmed by award-winning director and GoT alum Miguel Sapochnik along with Ryan Condal (Colony). It is set to air on HBO sometime in 2022.
