Today is Doctor Who Day, the anniversary of the airing of the very first episode on the BBC 56 years ago. And for the Doctor’s birthday, we have been gifted a trailer for the series 12 of Doctor Who. Let’s take a look at what the next season will have in store for us.
The Doctor Who Trailer Teases An Action-Packed Season
The Doctor Who trailer is full of action and excitement, complete with daring car chases and some familiar enemies. We get a sneak peek at some of this season’s guest stars, including Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry. The next season will take the Doctor and her companions from 18th century England to WW2 era France. Familiar aliens like the Judoon will be returning. And there is also a glimpse of a battered Cyberman, after the Doctor ominously intones that ‘something’ is coming for her.
The return of familiar aliens and old Doctor Who enemies like the Cybermen is a bit of a change after last season. In Chibnall’s first season as showrunner, there were no recognizable aliens or creatures. It seemed like Chibnall was actively trying to stay away from the creatures popularized by previous showrunners Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat. Until a revamped Dalek finally appeared in the finale of series 11, none of the famous Doctor Who baddies were seen. It looks like Chibnall is changing his tune this season, and bringing back some old favorites.

Alongside the familiar, there is still plenty of mystery in this Doctor Who trailer. Who or what is coming for the Doctor? Is it this mysterious Cyberman, that looks like he has seen better days? Since we know the Cybermen are engineered from human beings, is it an old friend or foe of the Doctor’s who has been transformed? Also, what is with all of the birds? Why does that beach look so familiar? (Okay I know it is definitely not the beach where the 10th Doctor said goodbye to Rose… right? It just looks like the same beach). And most importantly, why is the Jodie Whittaker wearing Matt Smith’s old suit (and bowtie!) in this promo pic? The answers will have to wait until 2020 when the new series will air on the BBC.

Doctor Who Series 12 Will Be Bigger Than Ever
Showrunner Chris Chibnall and star Jodie Whittaker are both teasing the enormity of the first episode of the series. Chibnall claims that it’s “the biggest episode they’ve done. It might be the biggest episode the show’s done.” This is quite a claim considering this is the show that brought in every actor to ever portray the Doctor (including some who are long deceased) in The Day of the Doctor for the show’s 50th anniversary.
Chibnall is also making it clear that he and Whittaker are sticking around for awhile. Despite rumors that the two were already planning their exit, Chibnall says that they are already planning season 13. As for the upcoming season, it will be bigger and more exciting than the last one. “It feels like a step up,” Chibnall says. “It’s probably more ambitious than last year. Scale, storytelling, everything. I would say we are aiming to keep moving forward and up. There are bigger moments this year.”
If there is anything that we know about Doctor Who, it is that things are often bigger on the inside.
Series 12 of Doctor Who will air on the BBC in early 2020, the specific premiere date is still unknown.
