Bad Wolf Takes Control Of Doctor Who With The Return Of Russell Davies – Costing The BBC Millions of Dollars

With the return of Russell T Davies as the Doctor Who showrunner set for 2023, the BBC has compromised an extremely rich revenue stream. Reports indicate that Davies made his return to the sci-fi series contingent upon this deal. And so the show will be taken over by Bad Wolf – the production company started by two former Doctor Who execs. Bad Wolf will be responsible for the creative direction of the show. However, the BBC will still be responsible for merchandise and and international sales. This deal could mean that the BBC will lose out on millions of dollars of revenue from Doctor Who.

Who Is Bad Wolf?

Bad Wolf is a production company that began in 2015, founded by Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. The duo launched the company after departing the BBC, but during their tenure at the network they both worked with Davies on Doctor Who. The name of the company is a reference to Doctor Who and the Bad Wolf storyline involving Rose Tyler in the first series of the reboot. Since their launch, Bad Wolf has been responsible for bringing shows to the BBC and HBO Max like His Dark MaterialsA Discovery of Witches, and The Night Of.

Bad Wolf said the following in a statement. “We are delighted to be joining Russell T Davies on a looped ontological paradox. Where Russell goes, we are proud to follow. With BBC Studios, Bad Wolf will be producing the all-new series of Doctor Who. It is a privilege to be asked to support him in Doctor Who’s future.”

Sony Acquires Bad Wolf And Doctor Who Distribution

In addition to this strange deal is another bit of news. Bad Wolf is also set to be acquired by Sony Entertainment by the end of the year. Since Sony has an exclusive deal with HBO Max for distribution, that could mean that Doctor Who will become widely available on the streaming network in the future. And if Sony is now in charge of distribution, that could be a financial blow to the BBC.

Moving from the BBC to Bad Wolf is a dramatic change for Doctor Who, as the show has historically been produced by the BBC. What kind of changes this will mean for the show is unclear. But it certainly seems as though Russell T Davies wants full creative control over the future of Doctor Who. Fans of Davies may rejoice at this news. But diehard fans of Doctor Who who remember the original series may be uncomfortable handing the beloved show over to a new production company, and larger entertainment conglomerates.

Davies Will Return To TARDS In 2023

Russell T Davies is due to return to Doctor Who in 2023. Current showrunner Chris Chibnall and star Jodie Whittaker are still onboard the TARDIS through 2022. Their last season just kicked off on Sunday with Doctor Who: Flux. They will remain in charge of Doctor Who through 2022 after the end of this season and two Doctor Who specials that will inevitably see our first female Doctor regenerate into whatever dude Davies chooses to be the next Doctor.
