Disney+ Is Rebooting Flight of the Navigator
Flight of the Navigator, the 1986 sci-fi adventure film, hasn’t enjoyed the same kind of nostalgic success as its contemporaries. While it still has a cult following, it doesn’t have the kind that produces events like the Goonies Cast Reunion. That may change, though, now that Disney+ is rebooting Flight of the Navigator as a TV series.
Original Film was Landmark in Special Effects

The movie, which follows 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) after his abduction by an alien spacecraft, was notable for a few reasons. First, it features one of the earliest film roles by Sarah Jessica Parker. It also has Paul Reubens, credited as Paul Mall, in a voice role.
However, perhaps more significantly, it’s one of the first films to use extensive CGI in its special effects. It’s also one of the first films to use morphing technology. In addition, it’s one of the first to have an entirely electronic soundtrack. Finally, it was the first movie to use reflection mapping, which allowed them to create reflections on chrome in the film. Filmmaker Alan Melikdjanian, aka Captain Disillusion, released a documentary earlier this year about the special effects they used in the movie.
Disney+ Is Rebooting Flight of the Navigator as TV Series
In the film, little Joey disappears in 1978, reappearing in 1986. However, while time has obviously passed in the world, Joey is still 12. Much like in E.T. the Extraterrestrial, Joey then finds himself ensnared in government nonsense. We assume that the TV show will follow the same basic storyline. However, as The Hollywood Reporter says, the protagonist will now be a girl.

Bryce Dallas Howard will direct the series, as well as produce. Howard, who will be in next year’s Jurassic World: Dominion, has directed episodes of The Mandalorian. She also directed an episode of the upcoming Disney+ show The Book of Boba Fett.
Cramer, the star of the 1986 film, has led a troubled life since his acting career waned. The film Life After the Navigator, about those troubles, was released last year. The original Flight of the Navigator is streaming on Disney+.
