Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Canceled after Part 4

In a move that sadly should come as no surprise, especially in this year, Netflix announced this week that they had canceled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The streamer has aired 3 seasons–or in the parlance of the show, parts–at this point. Part 4 is still on the way.

Why Was Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Canceled?

Netflix didn’t give a reason for the show’s cancellation, but it isn’t unusual. Like the Fox network, Netflix isn’t shy about cancelling shows. Sometimes, it’s a matter of economics. If a show costs more than it’s making Netflix, for instance, then they won’t hesitate to give it the ax. As Cindy Holland, the streamer’s head of original content, said last year, “It’s a combination of things. When we’re investing, we decide how much to invest based on the audience that will show up. If the audience doesn’t show up, we think about the reason to continue to invest in something that doesn’t do as well as we had hoped. Obviously, critical acclaim is important too, but we’re really about trying to stretch our investment dollars as far as we can and make good on our investors’ money – it’s theirs, not ours.”

And speaking of economics, there is also the issue of new subscribers. Some people believe that shows don’t live long at Netflix because the service thinks that new shows attract new subscribers. It’s unclear if this is true or not–Netflix famously guards its viewing numbers–but it does make sense.

What Will Part 4 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Bring?

Part 4, which will comprise 8 episodes, will explore the aftermath of Father Blackwood’s summoning. As such, we’ll see the “eldritch terrors” invade Greendale. That’s right–cosmic horror is coming. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told The Wrap, “One of my favorite horror writers is H.P. Lovecraft, and there’s a definite H.P. Lovecraft vibe to Part 4. And we’re taking very, very old primal ideas of horror and fear and unleashing them on Sabrina, on the Spellmans and on Greendale. And Greendale becomes a battle ground for this really epic battles between evil and good and horror and sanity and it’s huge, it’s big.” He also adds that each episode “is like its own mini horror movie, which is exciting.”

Regular viewers will remember, of course, that in a season 2 maybe-premonition, Harvey (Ross Lynch) went off to art school at Arkham Colony for the Arts. His roommate there was “Howard,” who drew his artistic inspiration from the demons that haunted him. Before he, you know.

So that’s that. We’ll look forward to a lot of battles, I guess.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 4 will drop on Netflix later this year.
