Titans, the HBO Max series based on the Teen Titans of DC Comics, has some big news. There’s going to be a Batgirl on Titans. So who’s this new gal stepping into the sensible boots of Barbara Gordon?

Wait, Go Back to the Concept of the Show

Sigh. I guess everyone can’t be an expert on Titans, a show I definitely knew existed before this week. Anyway, it’s based on the team of Teen Titans, who, in the comics are a bunch of teenage heroes. No, not folks like Addison Rae, whom Joshua has definitely heard of–how do you do, fellow kids?–but people like Dick Grayson, aka Robin.

As you might guess from the title change, they’ve pretty much ditched the teen aspect in favor of an older (and more varied) age group. That’s because this is the new Titans, reformed after their teenage shenanigans. Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) is still at the center of it all, and he’s joined by teammates like Kory Anders (Anna Diop) and Rachel Roth (Teagan Croft). And now in season 3, the ever-expanding team is expanding once more with Batgirl on Titans.

Savannah Welch to Be Batgirl on Titans

In case you’re unfamiliar with the history of Batgirl, then you should know one infamous detail. In Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker paralyzed Barbara Gordon. While in subsequent storylines, experimental therapy restored the use of Barbara’s legs, her earlier paralysis is still an important part of her story.

Titans could have fast-forwarded through all of it, but they’ve opted not to. Instead, they’ve cast Savannah Welch. Welch has appeared in films like Boyhood and Tree of Life. Her most recent role was in the History Channel series Six, based upon the exploits of SEAL Team Six. Welch is also a musician, performing as one of the members of the alt-country quartet The Trishas.

After a driver accidentally hit her in 2016, doctors amputated one of Welch’s legs when they decided that the injury was irreparable. It is unclear at this point if this show will incorporate her prosthetic leg into her character’s biography, but we do know that her Barbara Gordon will use a wheelchair.

According to Variety, which exclusively reported Welch’s casting, Gordon’s storyline will loosely follow her canon. To wit, after the Joker paralyzes her, she retires her Batgirl cowl and takes a job as Gotham’s police commissioner. Variety also says, “Her life gets more complicated when Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) returns to Gotham, rekindling their old romance and starting a new crime fighting partnership.”

Titans season 3 is still in production; we will let you know when to expect its premiere on HBO Max.
