Adaptations of sci-fi books have always been a solid choice for series and movies (e.g. Dune is killing it at the box office) and now we have more exciting news on that front: Netflix’s 3 Body Problem has shared twelve actors and actresses to fill key roles! It was first announced that the highly successful sci-fi trilogy by Chinese author Cixin Liu and translated by Ken Liu was going to be adapted by Netflix last year, although with some trepidation since Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were taking the helm. People still remember (or maybe they’re trying to forget) how D&D handled the chaotic final season of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series; will they be able to do 3 Body Problem justice? Regardless, there is a lot of excitement over the adaptation and the 3 Body Problem cast.

Who’s In The 3 Body Problem Cast?

The cast includes some familiar names including the MCU’s Benedict Wong (Dr. Strange; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), John Bradley and Liam Cunningham (both Game of Thrones alums), and Tsai Chin (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Other cast members include Jovan Adepo (When They See Us), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Jess Hong (Inked: The Brokenwood Mysteries), Marlo Kelly (Dare Me), Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), Sea Shimooka (Arrow), and Zine Tseng and Saamer Usmani (The Mauritanian).

Netflix didn’t share any additional details about what characters cast members will be playing and we don’t know whether the series will follow the books’ timeline chronologically. The 3 Body Problem trilogy tells the story of what happens when humanity discovers that we are not alone in the universe. The official synopsis for the first book says:

“Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion.”

Benioff and Weiss will act as showrunners and executive producers. Alexander Woo co-created the series with Benioff and Weiss and will serve as executive producer and writer. 3 Body Problem will be co-executive produced by series director Derek Tsang. Bernadette Caulfield executive produces, alongside Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue for T Street Productions. Lin Qi, the late former Chairman of Yoozoo Group, and Zhao Jilong, CEO of the rights-holder, The Three-Body Universe, also executive produce. Additional EPs are Plan B Entertainment, and Rosamund Pike, and Robie Uniackeare for Primitive Streak.

There’s no release date for 3 Body Problem, but if the show continues on the same trajectory (one of the producers was poisoned and the surrounding controversy over Liu’s comments that seemingly appeared to support the genocide of the Uighur Muslim people in China), there could end up being delays. Given that there is a solid cast now though, it appears that things are moving along.
