The CW Gives 12 Series Renewals for 2021 & 2022, Including Most Of Their DC Slate Of Shows
Things are weird in television production right now. The US and the world are facing the downslope of the COVID-19 pandemic, yet things are still very uncertain. For example, we know that there will not be a 2021 crossover event with the Arrowverse (or CWVerse, if you choose) shows due to the pandemic protocols. While last year, the CW renewed every series on its slate, we know that’s not the case this year. They’ve already broken the news that this is the final season of Black Lightning, and that Supergirl will end, as well. They also passed on the remarkable Green Arrow and the Canaries. Yet it’s not all bad news for DC fans. The CW gave series renewals to 12 of their shows for the 2021 and 2022 season. Among those coming back are The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman.
The other series renewals for 2021 and 2022 are The CW shows not related to DC Comics like All American, Charmed, In the Dark, Legacies, Nancy Drew, Riverdale, Roswell, New Mexico, and freshman series Walker starring Supernatural alum Jared Padalecki.
Also, both Walker and Superman and Lois found their first seasons extended by five episodes. Some series that haven’t aired their new seasons, like Stargirl, are still up-in-the-air. Other shows that haven’t aired new season yet, like Kung Fu and Republic of Sarah were also excluded. However, this probably has more to do with the uncertainty of the pandemic than any statement on these shows’ quality.
As CEO Mark Pedowitz said, via Deadline.com:
“Right now, we’re probably going to stay the status quo down the line with everything we have because a) they’re working and b) I’d rather have a known quantity on the air than an unknown quantity…. Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season. As The CW’s 2020-2021 season kicks into high gear, we are thrilled creatively with the direction of our first new shows out of the gate, Walker and Superman & Lois, that we wanted to order the additional episodes to complete their first seasons.”

With the 12 series renewals for 2021 and 2022, The CW is poised to have a robust schedule in the fall, and more series renewals will likely be announced later in the year. The renewal of the DC series, however, is a interesting sign of things to come. With HBOMax struggling to find its place in the ongoing Streaming Wars, some suspected that WarnerMedia would hold on to those properties for themselves. Nonetheless, the newer series, like Batwoman, Stargirl, and Superman and Lois will almost certainly find their streaming home on HBOMax. The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will likely continue to head to Netflix after their seasons air.
