Star Wars Trilogy Still On For Rian Johnson, Just No Actual Timetable Yet

In the halcyon days before the release of the eighth Star Wars film in the Skywalker saga, director Rian Johnson seemed poised to be in the Lucasfilm business for some time. More than a month before its release, Lucasfilm announced that the Looper director would write a new series of films, directing (at least) the first one. Yet, since then The Last Jedi backlash descended on the fandom, and there’s been little-to-no news about this project. The only future Star Wars movies we know about are Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron and Taika Waititi’s unnamed film. Yet, thanks to a charity auction virtual meet-up, we know that Rian Johnson is still planning to finish his Star Wars trilogy, yet there is no definite timetable in place to turn in the scripts, start pre-production, or prepare to film.

Since the release of The Last Jedi, some folks speculated that Lucasfilm shelved Johnson’s trilogy. Despite the massive volume of Star Wars news on Disney Investor’s Day, there was nary a mention of him or his project. Lucasfilm is notoriously tight-lipped about projects that are in development, so this should not come as a surprise. The Star Wars project produced by Kevin Feige is similarly both still on track and not really discussed much. But, like the Rian Johnson trilogy, there is no reason to think that Feige’s Star Wars movie isn’t still underway. (And, for all we know, they could be the same movie.)

Romance author Sariah Wilson offered to the top bid at a charity auction to have a conversation with the Star Wars director. And, like any Star Wars fan would, shared what she learned.

She wrote, via Twitter (emphasis hers):

“I’m just going to post this now because I can see that I’m going to get a lot of requests – Yes, Rian’s SW trilogy is still on. No dates or timelines because he has other projects going on, but it is happening. THAT IS ALL I KNOW ABOUT IT.”

The writer gushed about her conversation with the director as one basically between two storytellers who love the craft. They talked about romance, specifically that Johnson saw Adam Driver’s Ben Solo/Kylo Ren as a clear romantic interest for Daisy Ridley’s Rey. She also said that he was very “hush hush” about the hotly anticipated sequel to Knives Out. However, she also said that while Rian Johnson confirmed to her that his Star Wars trilogy is still on track, but there are other projects of his coming first.

Regardless of how folks felt about The Last Jedi, knowing that a filmmaker as talented as Rian Johnson is at work on a Star Wars trilogy is great news. His best work are his original stories, and given that his trilogy will explore an entirely new cast of characters, it’s sure to be something fun and unique.

What do you think? Are you glad that Rian Johnson is still set to do a Star Wars trilogy? Share your hopes for the kind of stories you hope to see in the comments below.
