Ernest Cline became a best-selling artist by tapping into something we know well here at Comic Years: nerd culture. It’s hard enough building a world with a single theme, topic, or environment. Cline’s novel Ready Player One took elements from comics, video games, and movies to create a unique story. The film adaptation did well and helped guide many back to the source material. It seemed likely at some point we’d return to this futuristic dystopia. Now, we know that a Ready Player One sequel is set to release later this year.

Ready Player Two, the Ready Player One sequel with a title everyone could see coming, is set for 2020 release. The book will publish via Penguin Random House’s Ballantine Books on November 24. In the first book, we get a look at 2045. Overall, a crazy VR game called the Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation helps people escape a harsh reality. In short, the world is falling apart from capitalism and even the game is growing subject to an outside organization looking to advertise in the game. If you see where this is going, then you’re likely a fan of dystopian literature.

Overall, the game’s creator dies and sets in motion a golden egg hunt in the OASIS. If you find the Golden Easter Egg behind three keyed gates, then you come to own the game. The book released in 2011 to great acclaim. In short, fans and critics loved the title. Ready Player One received an Alex Award from the American Library Association and won the 2011 Prometheus Award.

In 2018, the film debuted at SXSW. The film’s screenplay was provided by Cline and Zak Penn, and directed by Stephen Spielberg himself. Ready Player One grossed $137.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $445.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $582.9 million. Despite doing well, it still fell short of competition like Venom. Funny enough, Venom is also getting a sequel at a later date.

Is a Sequel Necessary?

Don’t fret; we’re not talking spoilers.

Overall, the first book wraps things up with plenty of room for more adventures in the OASIS. At the end of the book, there is a new way for the game to exist in a world that desperately needs improvement. From new villains that could arise to more adventures with the main character Wade Watts and friends he meets in-game, there are a lot more things to explore. I really hope we get a better idea of the world years after the events of the first book. A perfect Ready Player Two sequel to me would take place 10 years after the first. Let’s see what decisions at the end of the first book did for the world and OASIS players.

If you loved the first book, then are you excited to see news of a sequel? If you are, then let us know in the comments. The same goes for those who think it might not work out as well as the first. Thanks for reading Comic Years for all things gaming, comics, and pop culture.
