It’s no secret that we’re big fans of author NK Jemisin – the MacArthur Genius Fellow and multi-Hugo award winning author. Jemisin is the author of series like The Inheritance Trilogy and her widely acclaimed Broken Earth trilogy. She has also written comics with her Far Sector series. Her last novel was The City We Became that came out in 2020. NK Jemisin is undoubtedly a master of the craft, and now she will teach aspiring writers with her new MasterClass.

The MasterClass series has gained popularity in recent years as many turn to online learning to pick up new skills. For instance, there are hundreds of classes available taught by professionals in various fields. Other authors who teach writing on the site include Neil Gaiman; Margaret Atwood, Roxane Gay, Amy Tan, and Walter Mosley.

The founder of the website – David Rogier – spoke about the new MasterClass offering from author NK Jemisin.

“As the first author to win three Best Novel Hugo Awards in a row, Nora is one of the most celebrated science fiction and fantasy writers. In her class, Nora teaches her methodology and framework for building new worlds; new magic systems, and new histories and cultures. It’s an amazing class.”

Learn How To Build Worlds And Break Into Publishing

Jemisin’s MasterClass will begin with world-building: an essential tool for any aspiring fantasy writer. She will also delve into characterization, psychology, POV, and archetypes. The class also has tips for how to find a literary agent, and navigating the world of publishing.

“If you’ve always wanted to write a science fiction or fantasy story and you’re not sure where to begin, I will help you build and populate that world from scratch.” Jemisin says in an introduction to her MasterClass. “If there’s anything to take away from my class, it’s that authors change the profession by their very existence. With my expertise in writing and publishing, we will make your voice heard and help you find success in these mean literary streets.”

Available exclusively on the MasterClass website, the lesson plan consists of 16 short classes. Each class runs between 10-25 minutes. And if her teaching style is anything like her writing style, I expect each class to be fascinating, emotionally compelling, and layered with meaning.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
