After the shocking move to kill the The Batgirl movie, lead actress Leslie Grace finally breaks her silence on Instagram.

Despite being on its last parts of production, Warner Bros. suddenly axed the Batgirl movie for good. With this decision, the movie will neither premiere theatrically nor on HBO Max. This news shocked many fans, making them question the future of other DCEU films in the making.

Leslie Grace actress reacts to the movie movie cancellation

Leslie Grace, the actress who’ll play the titular role in the Batgirl movie, expressed her reaction to the sudden shelving of the film. Grace previously starred in Lin Manuel Miranda’s movie version of the Broadway musical In The Heights in 2021.

The actress shared a few behind-the-scenes shots of the Batgirl movie on Instagram. Together with the photos is a heartfelt caption, thanking her castmates and Batgirl fans for the “love and belief” she received. You can read the full caption below:

“Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie “Batgirl,” I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland. I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan – THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, “my own damn hero!” #Batgirl for life! 🦇”

The abrupt decision of Warner Bros. regarding The Batgirl movie affected Michael Keaton’s appearance in the film. Batman personally trained Barbara Gordon in the comics, and the film would’ve been the best way to reintroduce Keaton’s Batman. Sources say that Batman will act as a mentor to the new generation of heroes in DCEU. Now, that dream hangs on a balance with the current development regarding the film. Keaton will also appear in The Flash movie. But that film’s future is also on the brink after Ezra Miller’s numerous incidents with the authorities.

Variety reports that the reason behind the cancellation of The Batgirl movie had nothing to do with the quality of the film. Sources say the studios intended to slate future DC movies “to be at a blockbuster scale.” The Batgirl movie didn’t make the cut as it had no theatrical release and was supposed to premiere on HBO Max.

Directors shared their reactions to The Batgirl movie shelving

Meanwhile, the directors of the film, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, expressed their shock upon getting the sad news. Both directors directed some episodes of Marvel’s Ms. Marvel, which received an overall positive reaction from fans.

In an Instagram post, the directors of the Batgirl movie said that they ” saddened and shocked by the news” and “still can’t believe it.” They said that as directors, “it is critical that world be shown to audiences,” noting how they wish that fans would be able “to see and embrace the final film themselves.”

The directors’ statement continued by thanking the cast and crew that they could work along with in the film. “Our amazing cast and crew did a tremendous job and worked so hard to bring Batgirl to life. We are forever grateful to have been part of that team. It was a dream to work with such fantastic actors like Michael Keaton, J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser, Jacob Scipio, Corey Johnson, Rebecca Front and especially the great Leslie Grace, who portrayed Batgirl with so much passion, dedication and humanity.”

The statement ends with the directors sharing their gratitude for being part of the DCEU, even for a short moment. “In any case, as huge fans of Batman since we were little kids, it was a privilege and an honor to have been a part of the DCEU, even if it was for a brief moment. Batgirl For Life.”

The Batgirl movie was supposed to release this year.
