With the Justice League Snyder Cut releasing soon on HBO Max, the movie has been in all the headlines recently. However, this new story is not looking forward to the new Justice League, but more looking back at the old one. The actor who played Cyborg recently spoke out against the movie’s second director, Joss Whedon. While Justice League was originally a Zack Snyder film, Whedon stepped in for rewrites and reshoots when a family tragedy caused Snyder to bow out. Over the years there’s been many comparisons between Whedon’s changes and Snyder’s cut of the movie. But Ray Fisher’s Joss Whedon allegations focus more on the director’s behavior on set.

How Joss Whedon Became Involved With Justice League

Joss Whedon’s geek credibility caused fans over the years to herald him as one of their own; a comic-book geek in mainstream Hollywood. From shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, Whedon has championed genre fiction for years. Fans felt vindication when Whedon became the director for the first two live-action Avengers movie. After parting ways with Marvel Studios, When original Justice League director Zack Snyder had to step down because of a tragedy in his family, Whedon took over. Some fans and critics did not appreciate the vision of the DCEU, so instead they brought in the guy who made the Vision of the MCU.

However, Whedon also rewrote and reshot most of the movie, altering Snyder’s vision. The fall-out of Whedon’s take-over resulted in mixed to negative reviews of Justice League, and poor Box Office performance. The biggest casualty, however, was the storyline of Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher. This perhaps explains why Fisher was a vocal supporter of the Snyder Cut since the beginning, but his recent comments were about Joss Whedon.

Fisher Began His Charge By Taking Back Earlier Comments About Whedon

Less than a month ago, Fisher shared an old video of himself at SDCC promoting Justice League on Twitter. In the video itself, Fisher praises Whedon’s handling of Justice League. In his tweet, however, he emphatically retracts those statements. Fisher goes on to clarify that Whedon’s on-set behavior was ‘gross’ and ‘abusive’. Fisher even directed his comments at the higher-ups of Warner Bros. the studio behind Justice League, claiming they enabled Whedon’s behavior.

It was a shocking turn of events and one that seemed to come to of nowhere. Although, it’s unclear exactly what type of behavior Fisher was specifically referring to with the word ‘gross’. But his reasons for being vague and unspecific were later explained. Fisher went on a few days later to clarify on an Instagram Live session, that he cannot go into further details due to a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

Not The First Time Allegations Have Come Out Against Whedon

During the height of the #MeToo movement of Hollywood, Whedon’s ex-wife, Kai Cole, accused him of misconduct in a Guest Blog on The Wrap. The blog basically claimed that Whedon’s outwardly feminist persona didn’t align with his behavior in private. This was further supported by Charisma Carpenter, Buffy, and Angel alum, who believes Whedon fired her from the shows because she was pregnant. After the initial tweets against Whedon, Fisher followed up with a tweet showing support to Cole and Carpenter as well.

Now, it’s unclear whether Ray Fisher’s Joss Whedon allegations were about any of his behavior towards women. But his support for the two women who spoke out against Whedon seems to contextualize those allegations. However, at an appearance at the recent Justice Con, Fisher makes his intentions and mission very clear, while also challenging Whedon himself.

Ray Fisher’s Joss Whedon Allegations Continue

Fisher’s comments during the Justice Con panel is the first time he discusses Whedon in person. As he continues, it sounds less like Fisher is airing dirty laundry, but more like he is on a mission to expose Whedon. Obviously, based on whatever behaviour of his Fisher experienced during Justice League. His comments are calculated, well thought out and articulately spoken. And it all seems like it’s part of a larger plan.

“It’s taken me two and a half years to get all the information I need to be able to build something that’s strong enough so people can’t dismiss it.

He went on to explain how he spent that time tracking down and speaking to people who would be willing to go on the record to confirm his allegations and be able to share their truth with the world. Fisher even alluded to a ‘process’ going on right now that will bring everything to light. Along with daring Joss Whedon to take action against him, if Fisher’s claims prove untrue.

“And if anything I said about that man is untrue, I invite him wholeheartedly to sue me for libel, to sue me for slander.”

There Is A Lot To Unpack Here From Ray Fisher’s Joss Whedon Allegations

The way with which Fisher is approaching the situation almost seems like that of a journalist preparing a massive expose. And if so, I wonder why he’s teasing it with these grand comments on public platforms, without any proof yet. I’m no lawyer, but if there is a contract preventing him from speaking about certain things, why go around advertising that he’s finding legal ways to protect himself as he prepares to possibly reveal those things?  On the upside, Fisher’s speaking to others to come forward and ensuring their protection is admirable. It definitely feels like Fisher is leading a charge against Whedon for what he considered to be toxic behavior on Justice League. What’s also interesting here though is that, unlike the #ReleaseThe SnyderCut movement, the other Justice League stars seem ominously silent.

Looks Like Ray Fisher Has Nothing To Lose

Ray Fisher had the most to gain after his casting in Justice League. The movie was Fisher’s feature film debut and, from all accounts, the crux of the story was very much about his character of Cyborg. Unlike the rest of the cast members of Justice League, Fisher had almost no other credits to his name prior to this. So for an actor like him to take such a bold stand against one of Hollywood’s biggest directors is stunning. Fisher has himself addressed this by saying that he doesn’t care if this ruins his career, as Accountability is greater than Entertainment, as he mentions on his social media captions.

Personally, I find it curious that the other cast members, all of whom are no stranger to scandals or taking a stand, are silent throughout this Joss Whedon situation. Jason Momoa who plays Aquaman is an activist himself, often taking a stand and protecting Indigenous and environmental causes. Gal Gadot who plays Wonder Woman used her star power to remove an alleged sexual abuser as a producer on the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984. So for these stars to remain quiet during this situation is surprising. To be fair, I presume they are all held under the same NDA as Fisher, and so are unable to make any statements. Perhaps they will voice their support once Fisher’s ‘process’ to reveal the truth is completed.

So far, as of this writing, no one from Whedon’s camp has responded to Ray Fisher’s Joss Whedon allegations.
