With the release of the newest Dune adaptation, fans are remembering all of the previous incarnations of the Atreides that have come to life on screen in the past. One of the best onscreen adaptations involves a SciFi miniseries of Children of Dune (the third book in the series) starring a young James McAvoy.  The actor has since gone on to play other legendary figures of science fiction and fantasy – including a turn as a young Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies. Over the years, McAvoy has played many dramatic roles, but he always returns to his genre roots. And it turns out that James McAvoy got some good advice from another genre veteran early on his career – one Claudia Black of Farscape fame.

James McAvoy Recalls Advice From Early In His Career

In a recent interview with Slashfilm, James McAvoy recalled his time playing Leto Atreides II in the Children of Dune miniseries. When asked if he had any advice for actor Timothee Chalamet who plays Paul Atreides in the new Dune movie, the actor remembered advice he was given by Black so long ago.

“I’ll tell you what’s one really good piece of advice that was given to me once, was by the cast of … Farscape. And it was at the L.A. premiere of Children of Dune. And they said to me, that the thing with science fiction, is that you have to believe it more than you believe good writing. Good writing, you can just do. It’s easier. But this stuff is hard, because it’s so bonkers, you know what I mean? And I’ve really, I’ve always remembered that advice and taken it to heart. It’s so kept me going really, through a lot of science fiction and fantasy work that I’ve done. Because it was Claudia Black that said it. And I think that’s just good advice for any actor doing any kind of science fiction and/or fantasy, you know?”

A Genre Legend

Actress Claudia Black played Aeryn Sun in Farscape, which ran on the SciFi channel from 1999-2003, right around the time that Children of Dune aired on the network. In the years since, she has made a name for herself as a voiceover actress.  She has brought to life iconic figures like Morrigan from the Dragon Age games, as well as characters in the Mass Effect trilogy. Black most recently acted in the sci-fi series Final Space.

Black took to Twitter to address the comments made by James McAvoy. And she seems positively thrilled that he remembered her words for so many years. She also opened up about what it is like to be a woman in Hollywood, ageing out of roles that are perfectly suited for her.

Black spoke about how it feels to be forgotten and diminished as a single mother in a cutthroat industry. Black said that “reading that I’d made an impact; somehow cut through the noise in a way. That someone I respected had heard me, meant the world to me. It even feels pathetic to admit. But life gets very small for women who have kids. Smaller still for single mums.”

This is the kind of wholesome celebrity interaction that we love to see here at Comic Years. We know that James McAvoy makes our day whenever he shows up on screen. And we’re happy that he made Claudia Black’s day too.

The newest Dune movie is playing now in theaters, and on HBO Max. But if you’re interested in seeing a young James McAvoy run around shirtless and steam up the dry desert of Arrakis, make sure to check out the Children of Dune miniseries if you can get your hands on it. It might also be a good time to revisit Farscape, and remember the brilliance of Claudia Black. Now if only we could get these two in a project together…

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
