Ghost In The Shell / Ultraman Crossover Announced By Netflix

A Ghost In The Shell / Ultraman crossover is coming, and I couldn’t be more excited. The latest reboot of the Ghost In The Shell series is coming to Netflix in just a few days. So, this crossover announcement is pretty timely. The somewhat-reboot of the Ghost In The Shell franchise is a CGI anime, like that of the Ultraman series. Ultraman has only released season 1 on Netflix, with a season 2 on the way. This Ghost In The Shell / Ultraman crossover may mean Netflix committed to both series for multiple seasons.

Ultraman Anime Franchise On Netflix Is A Something of a Sequel

The Ultraman franchise is about a character’s ability to turn into the titular Ultraman. The superhero is a being with powers whose origins are alien. The original Ultraman was a TV series from 1966. The Ultraman anime on Netflix comes from a manga that sequelized the events of the original. Netflix’s Ultraman takes the story beyond its origins, introducing even more aliens. The story follows the son of the original Ultraman, who discovers his own powers. He eventually becomes Ultraman to stop a new threat to the world, taking over his father’s legacy.

Ghost In The Shell Franchise Features A Darker Future

Ghost In The Shell is a cyberpunk story about a technologically advanced future. In this future, people now have the ability to network their brains into others. People can even augment their own bodies with special abilities. The story follows officers dealing with criminal elements who abuse these abilities. Task forces exist and battle criminals who seek to become invincible. The new Ghost In The Shell: SAC 2045 anime sees a sort of reboot to the original story. But all iterations feature the same main character, Major.

How Will The Ghost In The Shell / Ultraman Crossover Work?

Ultraman and Ghost In The Shell: SAC 2045 are in the same anime style of CGI animation. So the worlds will definitely be able to intersect with one another, at least visually. We know very little of how the stories of both anime will connect. The many anime iterations of Ghost In The Shell, as well as the manga, is much darker than that of Ultraman’s story. So it will be interesting to see how the stories cross over. The announcement of the crossover came with a video that showed scenes from both shows. The video didn’t seem to actually feature characters from both shows in the same frame. So it stands to reason that it was just a promotional video put together for the announcement itself. We may know more once Ghost In The Shell: SAC 2045 releases later this month.

Ghost In The Shell: SAC 2045 releases on Netflix on April 23. There is currently no release date on season 2 of Ultraman on Netflix.
