It seems like everyone has a podcast these days – check out our own Comic Years podcast for example. And celebrities are starting to get in on the podcast action too. This week news emerged that actors Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd – who played the hobbits Merry and Pippin in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy – are starting up a joint podcast.

The actors are famous friends who became as close as their fictional counterparts during the filming of the fantasy trilogy. And fans of the behind-the-scenes featurettes on the Lord of the Rings box set know that these two are also extremely funny. With excellent insights into the filmmaking process. Their new podcast will be called “The Friendship Onion.” It will see the actors reflecting on the films that made them famous.

“The Friendship Onion” is launching on May 18 and according to Deadline it promises to “bring banter, stories and comedy to the podcasting space. Each week will dig into the latest in pop culture; put fans’ Lord of the Rings knowledge to the test; reveal exclusive stories from filming and maybe even welcome surprise drop-ins from famous faces.” Sounds like there might be some special guests from the Lord of the Rings trilogy making appearances on the podcast. The cast of the fantasy films are famously tight-knit. So it wouldn’t be surprising for famous friends like Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, or even Sir Ian McKellan to pop up for a chat.

The statements from the two actors about the new podcast were predictably cheeky. Dominic Monaghan says: “I am contractually obliged to make a glowing comment here in regards to the podcast Billy and I are making together. This is proving difficult as Billy has abducted me and is holding me for ransom to the price of 44 bananas. Please, send bananas.”

In response, Billy Boyd says that “Dom took a little persuading, it’s true, but this podcast is going to rock. He is such a joker, you have to love Dom. Ha… But you also have to love bananas. So yes, send bananas.”

A Hobbit Reunion After 20 Years

Since appearing in Lord of the Rings 20 years ago, the two actors have kept busy working primarily in television. Monaghan of course starred in LOST as the addict/rockstar Charlie Pace. He has also appeared in shows like FlashforwardQuantum Break, and Bite Club. He also had a small role in Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker as the character Beaumont Kin.

Billy Boyd has kept to smaller, supporting roles since his time portraying Peregrin Took in Lord of the Rings. He has appeared in adaptations of Moby Dick and Macbeth. He also appeared as the slimy lawyer Gerald Forbes in recent seasons of Outlander.

It is wild that it has been 20 years since Fellowship of the Ring first hit theaters and changed the landscape of film forever. The trilogy paved the way for the current wave of fantasy adaptations, not to mention the upcoming Lord of the Rings series coming to Amazon Prime. Despite all of their other work, it is clear that Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan still hold a special place in their hearts for Lord of the Rings. We look forward to their new podcast, and all of the funny stories they have to share about their time as hobbits.

“The Friendship Onion” will launch its first episode on May 18, wherever you listen to podcasts. For more genre news and reviews, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today!

She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
