Patty Jenkins’ 2017 Wonder Woman was a revelation. Or even a revolution, if you want to look at it that way. The movie brought the first live-action, and long overdue film adaptation of the iconic Wonder Woman to the big screen. The movie had it all; a unique origin story, love, idealism and lots of action. Not to mention, incredible star power behind the performances making it one of the DCEU’s biggest critical and commercial successes. So all eyes looked to its 2020 sequel, to repeat the same magic. And despite having a lot of magic in the story, the critical reaction was divided. We at Comic Years figured that we should have a conversation about those reactions to the sequel. So, check out this episode of the Comic Years Podcast, featuring our Wonder Woman 1984 spoiler discussion.

Going straight to streaming along with theatrical, the Christmas release of Wonder Woman 1984 divided critics from all over. Things got even more complicated for international audiences who had to either brave theatres during a pandemic or pay extra depending on the market they’re in. Upon release, the movie garnered an even more varied reaction from fans and critics. The discourse ranged from the problematic appearance of Steve Trevor to making sense of the motivations of the villains. While behind the scenes, there was shifts in power dynamics, possible changes to the story, and how COVID-19 affected the release as well. Despite it all, there’s a lot to like about the movie, as mentioned in our spoiler-free Wonder Woman 1984 review. But there is also a lot that takes away from that enjoyment of the film, as we discuss on the podcast.
