Xolo Maridueña Cast As Blue Beetle For HBO Max Movie
DC Comics is continuing to up their production of more diverse superhero content, much to the delight of fans everywhere. We already know a Black Superman series is being developed on the streaming platform by Michael B. Jordan and now, we can look forward to DCEU’s first movie about a Latinx superhero (along with a Latinx writer and director). News broke that Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña was cast as Blue Beetle after the actor arrived with Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) at The Suicide Squad world premiere.
It seems like Blue Beetle will be an HBO Max exclusive movie (perhaps it’ll be one of the ten exclusive HBO Max films for 2022?), but it could also go the way of this year’s movies that got an HBO Max premiere and theater premiere. It’d be great to have a theater release for a Latinx superhero movie, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Leslie Grace’s Batgirl is going to be an HBO Max movie, but no word yet on whether Sasha Calle’s Supergirl will get her own theater release.
Who Is Blue Beetle BTW?

The rights for the Blue Beetle character and name were bought by DC Comics in 1983 and used by three different characters. The original Blue Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garrett who found an ancient scarab in an old Egyptian tomb that gave him superpowers. This HBO Max movie will focus on the third iteration of Blue Beetle, a Mexican-American teenage boy named Jamie Reyes who lives in El Paso, Texas. He was first seen in the comics in 2006 from creators Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner. One day Reyes offers to help his father in the garage that the family runs and discovers the original Blue Beetle scarab in the empty lot. The scarab fuses to him while he sleeps and he discovers that it morphs into alien armor that allows him to fight crime and travel in space.
His main powers include super-strength, flight, durability, instant weaponry, amazing combat skills, and access to alien technology. Throughout the comics, this third Blue Beetle becomes part of the Teen Titans and is even mentored by Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker.
As mentioned before, Soto will direct and the script was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (who is also working on the upcoming Scarface reboot). Maridueña is playing the titular character, although we don’t know much else about the cast. John Rickard is producing for HBO Max and Zev Foreman is executive producing.
Production on Blue Beetle is expected to begin in early 2022.
