Will There Be An Eternals Sequel? Probably. And That’s A Good Thing

Eternals ended with an insane cliffhanger. Arishem pulls  Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo from Earth so that he can review their memories and pass judgment on them and Earth. No pressure. Meanwhile, Makkari, Druig, and Thena are out in space looking for other Eternals when one finds them – Eros. Marvel Studios clearly sees Eternals as having franchise potential. However, critics bombarded the movie with negative reviews, making it Marvel’s first “rotten” movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Compared to past Marvel projects, the box office results aren’t that impressive either. However, we’re not in normal times. Eternals did well for the pandemic landscape. So…will there be an Eternals sequel? And if so, how will they go about it?

As they say, we vote with the almighty dollar. Despite a pandemic and negative reviews, Eternals worked its way to $165 million domestically and $401 million worldwide. That might not sound like a lot. In 2019, the future of the franchise would undoubtedly be in jeopardy. But in 2021, that’s an impressive score. Domestically, Eternals is ahead of No Time to Die, and just behind F9: The Fast Saga. In fact, if we take the average box office numbers for the top ten films prior to No Way Home’s release, we get the Eternals’ dollar amount.

Domestically, Eternals is also on par with other Marvel debuts. Captain America: The First Avenger made $177 million, Ant-Man came in at $180 million, and Thor finished with $181 million. Ant-Man is on its 3rd film, while Thor is on the fourth. But the domestic total is less than half the picture. Out of the four, Ant-Man did the best, with over $500 million. Thor made $450 million. But Cap, whose third movie made over a billion? He came in less than $400 million, behind Eternals.

Those aren’t the most important comparisons, however. The real indicator is Shang-Chi. Already considered one of the best Marvel movies ever made, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed $225 million domestically and $432 million worldwide. Oh, and we’re getting a Shang-Chi sequel. It’s also in the Eternals box office ballpark. So, we decided that there will be an Eternals sequel. All of us. Together.

Marvel is Proud of the Film’s Agenda. Or, as Trolls Call It, the “Woke Agenda”

Eternals had an incredibly diverse cast that went beyond race. Lauren Ridloff played the first deaf superhero (followed by Echo in Hawkeye). As well, Brian Tyree Henry didn’t just play the MCU’s first openly gay superhero. He and Haaz Sleiman gave us the first same-sex kiss in the MCU. Even the first sex scene in a Marvel movie also marked the first interracial sex scene. All of these landmarks are cool, but they’re also resonating with audiences. After seeing Makkari kick ass, there was a “250% spike in searches for ‘learn sign language for beginners.”

Phastos, meanwhile, made LGBTQIA+ fans cry in joy when he kissed his husband. Those moments’ importance can’t be tallied in box office results. But they probably helped the box office success, despite the grumbling of trolls who wanted to claim the diversity hurt the movie. That’s a claim that will never make sense.

Above all, diversity, box office, or otherwise, there is something on Rotten Tomatoes that seals the deal for an Eternals sequel: Audience score. With over 10,000 verified ratings, the RT audience score is an impressive 78%. Viewers, overall, loved the movie. To a studio, that means “investment.”

Okay, So There Will be an Eternals Sequel – When and How Will That Happen?

Since we can confidently say that an Eternals sequel will happen, how soon should we expect it? Well, not before 2024 and more than likely sometime in 2025. There are six untitled Marvel movies with release dates from the end of 2023 to the end of 2024. Sounds like a lot? Well, those slots are easy to fill. Here are the movies we know are coming out: Fantastic Four, Blade, Captain America 4, Shang-Chi 2, and Deadpool 3. That’s five out of six already. But don’t expect that the Eternals sequel will take the sixth spot. There are two likely movies for that title. The first is Spider-Man 4 with Tom Holland. They’ve already suggested another trilogy, and after making all of the money, expect everyone to be very excited to come back.

The other is one Marvel fans have been waiting for since the MCU started – even if it wasn’t a possibility until a few years ago. X-Men. Sure, there’s almost nothing out there right now that would suggest production, but November 8th, 2024, the last unfilled spot, is a long while away. An Eternals sequel is certainly a possibility, but waiting longer could benefit the franchise anyway.

Where the Story Could Go When the Eternals Finally Return

Again, crazy cliffhangers. But they aren’t cliffhangers we need to pick up on immediately, the way we did with No Way Home. Let’s skip forward a few years. We don’t need to see Thena and her crew collect Eternals like Pokémon. We also don’t need to see Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo’s trial. Instead, get to the rescue. One character we don’t need to see again is Ikaris. Let him be dead in the sun. An Ikaris redemption story sounds boring. He was the villain. Keep it that way.

However, four years gives 16-year-old Lia McHugh some time to grow up. Her character was stuck in a child’s body for a few thousand years, but Sersi used the power of the unborn celestial to turn her fully human. It would be wonderful to see how she explored humanity and how she processed her family’s disappearance. Furthermore, it sets up a heartbreaking story arch for her. The character will have to choose between staying human and living the life she wants and becoming an Eternal again to help save her family. Then, we would conveniently have an adult version of Sprite moving forward.

But that’s just an educated guess. If the Eternals sequel does happen, what are you hoping to see next?
