Who Is Sprite? A Look At Marvel Comics’ Eternal Characters

When the Eternals movie was first announced at SDCC 2019 for the MCU’s Phase 4, people had questions. Who the heck were these Eternals? How will they fit into the MCU? Well, now we know (kind of). Marvel Studios released the final Eternals trailer and fans got a clearer picture of what these beautiful superheroes will be doing in the MCU. We wrote about the history of the Eternals, but basically, they’re the creation of divine beings, the Celestials (Ego, Peter Quill’s father, was one of these beings). The Celestials created early humanoids as a way to kickstart human evolution, thus creating the Eternals (the gorgeous, good-hearted ones) and the Deviants (the ugly, evil ones). The former was tasked with protecting Earth (and later, humankind) from the wicked plans of the Deviants. While we’ve gotten a glimpse of these new characters, I’m going to take a closer look at each of the 10 new superheroes. In this first post of the series, I’m asking: who is Sprite?

Who Is Sprite And What Are Her Powers?

Sprite, who is played by Lisa McHugh, may look like a pre-teen, but she’s actually thousands of years old. She can create life-like illusions and can manipulate her appearance, oftentimes trying to look older because she’s forever looked like a child and humanity has often treated her as such. Despite her youth, Sprite is very strong and clever; like the other Eternals, she possesses super strength and durability. She is virtually immune to disease, aging, and extreme temperatures and can regenerate from any injury that does not completely break apart his molecules. Sprite can also cause objects to levitate or fly at speeds of up to 760 miles per hour.

A History of Sprite

who is sprite

Sprite was one of the original Eternals created by Jack Kirby in the 1970s, although the character was originally male instead of female. He was a bit of a prankster because the other Eternals often left him out of activities due to his youth, so he acted out, playing tricks on both Eternals and humans (William Shakespeare and Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie were apparently some of the people he teased). Sprite is actually quite similar to another fellow prankster: Loki. Both are often not taken seriously and left out of things, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Sprite turns out to be gender-fluid too.

Sprite’s human alter ego was as a child actor named Colin, who starred in a TV show called That’s So Sprite. After putting his fellow Eternals in danger, he was murdered by another Eternal named Zuras and then reborn as a female Sprite.

Eternals premieres November 5, 2021 in theaters everywhere.
