Who Is Phastos? A Look At Marvel Comics’ Eternals Characters

When the Eternals movie was first announced at SDCC 2019 for the MCU’s Phase 4, people had questions. Who the heck were these Eternals? How will they fit into the MCU? Well, now we know (kind of). Marvel Studios released the final Eternals trailer and fans got a clearer picture of what these beautiful superheroes will be doing in the MCU. We wrote about the history of the Eternals, but basically, they’re the creation of divine beings, the Celestials (Ego, Peter Quill’s father, was one of these beings). The Celestials created early humanoids as a way to kickstart human evolution, thus creating the Eternals (the gorgeous, good-hearted ones) and the Deviants (the ugly, evil ones). The former was tasked with protecting Earth (and later, humankind) from the wicked plans of the Deviants. While we’ve gotten a glimpse of these new characters, I’m going to take a closer look at each of the 10 new superheroes. In this first post of the series, I’m asking: who is Phastos?

Who Is Phastos And What Are His Powers?

Phastos, who is played by Brian Tyree Henry, is the go-to inventor of the Eternals. He has genius-level intellect and is a master engineer, creating technologically advanced objects to move both humanity and the Eternals forward. Phastos carries a weapon that is shaped like a hammer, which can fire bolts of cosmic energy. He also owns many other advanced weapons of his own creation; despite this, he is a pacifist, and refuses to go to war with the Deviants when they attack.

A History of Phastos

Jack Kirby created the Eternals comics in the 1970s, but Phastos was not part of the original; instead, he appeared in the third generation of the Eternals in 1985 that was created by Peter B. Gillis and Sal Buscema. This set of Eternals was still based on science fiction and mythology though; in the comic series, Phastos was alive during ancient Greek times and was often mistaken for the famous Greek God Hephaestus, who is the Olympian god of fire and metalworking.

As mentioned before, Phastos is against war, but he also has a very pessimistic view of life. Compared to the other Eternals, his outlook for the future is grim and he basically thinks life is meaningless, but this also drives him to look for something or someone to prove him wrong.

The most exciting thing about Phastos’s character is that he’s going to be the first openly gay character in the MCU. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, confirmed that he’ll have a husband and family, something that is “just part of who he is.” We already know that Loki is gender-fluid, and Feige said that he hopes to bring more LGBTQ representation to the MCU.

Eternals premieres November 5, 2021 in theaters everywhere.
