Who Is Ikaris? A Look At Marvel Comics’ Eternals Characters
When the Eternals movie was first announced at SDCC 2019 for the MCU’s Phase 4, people had questions. Who the heck were these Eternals? How will they fit into the MCU? Well, now we know (kind of). Marvel Studios released the final Eternals trailer and fans got a clearer picture of what these beautiful superheroes will be doing in the MCU. We wrote about the history of the Eternals, but basically, they’re the creation of divine beings, the Celestials (Ego, Peter Quill’s father, was one of these beings). The Celestials created early humanoids as a way to kickstart human evolution, thus creating the Eternals (the gorgeous, good-hearted ones) and the Deviants (the ugly, evil ones). The former was tasked with protecting Earth (and later, humankind) from the wicked plans of the Deviants. While we’ve gotten a glimpse of these new characters, I’m going to take a closer look at each of the 10 new superheroes. In this first post of the series, I’m asking: who is Ikaris?
Who Is Ikaris And What Are His Powers?
Ikaris, who is played by Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden, is the most powerful Eternal and is technically considered the leader of the Eternals although he often butts heads with his on-again, off-again Eternal lover Sersi, who has a different approach to humanity than Ikaris does. He seems to be quite similar to Superman in powers: he has superhuman strength and durability as well as the ability to fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes (they’re actually called “optic energy blasts,” not lasers). He is also experienced in hand-to-hand combat, including human wrestling styles. Ikaris has the ability to teleport, but he doesn’t like to do so very often because it makes him feel uncomfortable. As the most powerful Eternal, he is also able to manifest the Blue Flame, which is a unique energy required to recreate the physical forms of Eternals, humans and/or Deviants into a Uni-Mind, a psychic entity with the combined power of all those who helped in its creation.
A History of Ikaris

Ikaris was created by Jack Kirby as leader of the Eternals in the 1970s. He is described as “moral, kind, and charismatic,” although when it comes to the Deviants and humanity he can be brash and headstrong. Like Sersi, Ikaris has roots in Greek mythology. Icarus was the son of Daedalus and they tried to escape from the maze of the Centaur by constructing wings connected with wax; unfortunately, Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax melted, resulting in his death. Ikaris himself didn’t fall to his death, but his half-human son (also named Ikaris) did after he went in search of his father using a flight harness.
Ikaris’s human alter ego is Ike Harris and he’s mainly in this form to help with the preparation of the coming of the Fourth Host of the Celestials, which is a gathering of Celestials who will determine the fate of Earth (will this be a plot point in the Eternals movie?).
Eternals premieres November 5, 2021 in theaters everywhere.
