Spider-Man 3 Is Set To Begin Filming In Atlanta According to Tom Holland
The long drought of movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has only increased during the pandemic. Due to production and movie theater shutdowns, the entire schedule for Phase 4 of the MCU has been postponed. This has kept fans of the MCU in suspense. We are all eager for any tidbit of news relating to new Marvel movies. So the internet was set abuzz today when actor Tom Holland gave us a ray of hope. He announced via his Instagram story that he just landed in Atlanta. Holland is there to begin filming the third live-action Spider-Man movie in the MCU.

A follow-up Instagram story showed Holland clutching an iPad with his script for the new Spider-Man movie. He says that he is about to read through it and find out what is in store for him over the next 5 months. Holland isn’t giving away any spoilers however. He ruefully admits that he has learned his lesson. This is of course a reference to how many accidental spoilers Holland gave out in interviews leading up to Avengers: Endgame. Eventually Marvel gave Tom Holland a chaperone in Benedict Cumberbatch to keep him in check.
And it looks like that isn’t the last time we’ll see Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland making the rounds as a pair for interviews. According to reports, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange will find themselves working together in more than one upcoming MCU film.
Will We See The Sinister Six In Spider-Man 3?

A Tom Holland fan page on Instagram re-posted the stories from Holland’s official account announcing the Spider-Man 3 filming news. Among the hashtags used in the post was #SinisterSix. This references rumors that the villainous supergroup will be appearing in Phase 4 of the MCU. Recent reports also confirm that Jamie Foxx will reprise his role of Electro for the next Spider-Man film. The character of Electro as played by Foxx last appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 back in 2014. The Amazing Spider-Man films starred actor Andrew Garfield in the role of Peter Parker. They are not officially part of the MCU… yet.
Electro is one of the core villains in the Sinister Six alongside Mysterio – who appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Vulture is also in the group, and we already have Michael Keaton in that role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Other members include notable villains who have appeared in Spider-Man films over the past two decades. A Sinister Six lineup would also see the return of Doctor Octopus – who appeared in Spider-Man 2 in 2004 played by Alfred Molina. There is also Sandman, portrayed by Thomas Hayden Church in the last Spider-Man 3 that came out in 2007.
In fact the only Sinister Six villain who has not appeared in a Spider-Man film to date is Kraven the Hunter. However, it looks like Sony is working on a film dedicated to that very character, as reported in August. How this ties into the upcoming Spider-Man films (and Sony’s deal with Marvel to license the character) remains to be seen.
Is The MCU Ready To Enter The Multiverse?

All of this news leads fans to speculate that the next Spider-Man movie could be a major crossover event. This is due to the implications of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse that came out in 2018. The inclusion of the multiverse could link all of the disparate Spider-Man films and actors from the past two decades. This means that there is a distinct possibility that previous actors who played the role of Peter Parker could appear. This includes Garfield, as well as Tobey Maguire who rebooted the live action role with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2002. Interesting to note that director Sam Raimi is returning to the world of comic book movies. He will direct the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel… and we bet that movie is also likely feature an appearance from the web-slinger.

This theory is further supported by the confirmed title for the next Doctor Strange film in the Phase 4 line-up. That film is of course Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This movie is set for release after the next Spider-Man installment. However it seems to be confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character of Doctor Strange will appear in the next Spider-Man as well. Although Strange might just be appearing as Peter’s new mentor. It would also make sense for his inclusion to be related to the multiverse angle.
With so little MCU news over the past few months, speculation is all that we are able to do right now. But with the filming of Spider-Man 3 now underway in Atlanta, we look forward to hearing more news about Spider-Man 3 from Tom Holland in the months to come.
