Netflix has a new superhero offering in the works, Thunder Force is currently in production in Atlanta. Set photos show off the stars of this comedy, and their superhero outfits. The film stars Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy as two women who develop superpowers. McCarthy’s husband Ben Falcone wrote the film, making this the fourth film he has worked on writing/directing with McCarthy.

What Do We Know About Thunder Force On Netflix?

We don’t know many details about Thunder Force, but it is likely that this will be a rare superhero comedy. McCarthy has played serious roles recently in films like Can You Ever Forgive Me? However, the actress is best known for her comedic work in films like Bridesmaids and the television show Mike & Molly. Known best for her dramatic work, Academy-Award winner Octavia Spencer has also demonstrated a flair for the comedic at times.

There have been few superhero comedies over the years. Many of the previous offerings have flopped, like My Super Ex-Girlfriend. But others have attained cult-status and remain beloved by fans of the genre, such as Mystery Men. The larger comic book movie universes of DC and Marvel have leaned into more dramatic and darker territory in the past decade. But Marvel has at least seen a shift into a blend of comedy and drama with films like Ant-Man, Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: RagnarokHowever these movies have a tendency to be standard superhero fare, with comedic elements. It is possible that Thunder Force will be a comedy first, and a superhero movie second. Since the film does not appear to be based on any pre-existing comic book or source material, the possibilities are endless.

A Female-Led Superhero Movie

Thunder Force is unique in that it is a female-led superhero movie, with McCarthy and Spencer in the lead roles. The film appears to be still casting, making these leaked photos early production photos. The only other person listed on the IMDB page currently is French actress Pom Klementieff, who played the role of Mantis in the MCU.

There has been controversy over the years about the limited roles of women in comic-book movie franchises. Only a few movies have been dedicated to the origin stories of familiar female superheroes. In terms of recent standalone female-led superhero movies, we only have Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, with Black Widow due for release in 2020. So it is refreshing to see two acclaimed actresses suiting up for a potential superhero buddy comedy. Hopefully Thunder Force will be a good movie, and a welcome addition to the independent superhero film canon.

Thunder Force will stream on Netflix at some point in the future, but no release date has been announced.
