The Suicide Squad Finished Filming, Says Director
Earlier this week, director James Gunn tweeted that The Suicide Squad has finished filming along with a cover image of the latest issue of Den of Geek, which features a cover story about the ragtag team of supervillains. At the beginning of April, The Suicide Squad trailer dropped, with the red band trailer beating Mortal Kombat for the number of viewers watched in a week. Suffice it to say that fans are excited and there will be much speculation about what will happen in the film.

Many people seemed surprised, with one Twitter user asking, “Is it unusual to have it finished this long before a release date? Is it thanks to lockdown that it’s already finished? Looking forward to it!!!”

Gunn’s response makes sense, especially since he has a pretty full plate with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the Peacemaker on HBO Max to finish up. Originally, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was going to be part of Marvel’s Phase 4 (announced at Comic-Con 2019), but after Disney cut ties with Gunn in the summer of 2018 over jokes he had tweeted regarding rape and pedophilia, production was stalled. Disney later reinstated Gunn as director after Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn met with him on multiple occasions to discuss the situation. By this time though, Gunn was already on board for The Suicide Squad, which meant that other films were on the back burner as he finished up the DC film.
Given the positive response to The Suicide Squad trailer and the quick filming schedule though, it’s unlikely that Gunn will suffer any setbacks. Many of the other MCU’s Phase 4 movies also saw delayed releases (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder) so in the end, it seemed like things worked out.
The Suicide Squad debuts in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
