The Gilded Ones Adaptation Will Bring A Feminist Fantasy To Life
Forna’s website tells us that The Gilded Ones is “the start of a bold and immersive West African-inspired, feminist fantasy series for fans of Children of Blood and Bone and Black Panther ( specifically the Ta-Nehisi Coates run) . In this world, girls are outcasts by blood and warriors by choice.”
The Gilded Ones is a stunning feminist fantasy, where women bleed gold when they have the gift of immortality. Forna has spoken about the bloody metaphor. And how it represents the way women are treated as commodities in so many cultures around the world. “We are seen as objects,” Forna said in an interview. “It doesn’t matter where in the world we are.”
Brad Weston and Negin Salmasi of Makeready are producing the adaptation of The Gilded Ones. Misha Green – writer, producer, and showrunner for Lovecraft Country – is also onboard to bring The Gilded Ones to life onscreen.
Author Namina Forna herself will write the script for the film adaptation of The Gilded Ones. This makes sense, as Forna works as a screenwriter in Los Angeles. She has written for a number of short films over the years. But adapting her own novel into a feature film will be a task that combines both of her professional worlds.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
