Sure, it may be the holiday season. But it’s also officially Awards Season! The time of year where all film critics and casual movie watchers alike place their bets on who will win some important (and some not-so-important) trophies for the work in film and television. The Golden Globes are one of the more prominent broadcasts during the season, with many assuming that the results go on to have a big impact on the Oscars. So, here are all of the nominations for the 2020 Golden Globes. And the nominees are…

Best Motion Picture, Drama

1917

The Irishman

Joker

Marriage Story

The Two Popes

Congratulations to Netflix for getting so many films in the Best Picture category! This list doesn’t have too many surprises. Though, since 1917 has yet to be released, it’s hard to make a prediction. My bets are on Marriage Story from TIFF

Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Dolemite Is My Name

Jojo Rabbit

Knives Out

Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood

Rocketman

Many people love the Globes for how they split up categories since the Musical/Comedy category is often overlooked at the Oscars. Aside from Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood, it’s unlikely that any of the other films on this list will make it to a Best Picture Oscar nomination. So, we’re happy to see some well-deserving movies here. Though, our bet is still on Once Upon a Time.

Best Director, Motion Picture

Bong Jong Ho, Parasite

Sam Mendes, 1917

Todd Phillips, Joker

Martin Scorsese, The Irishman

Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood

What a stacked list. It’s a hard race to call since each film has a unique vision. It would be fantastic to see the win go to Bong Jong Ho. Though, with Todd Phillips’ directing such a strong performance by Joaquin Pheonix, we aren’t ready to call it just yet.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama

Cynthia Erivo, Harriet

Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story

Soairse Ronan, Little Women

Charlize Theron, Bombshell

Renée Zellweger, Judy

Scarlett Johansson has had a pretty good year. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if she took the win. Though, Zellweger is the one to beat.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Ana de Armas, Knives Out

Awkwafina, The Farewell

Cate Blancett, Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Beanie Feldstein, Booksmart

Emma Thompson, Late Night

This category is full of delightful surprises. Cate Blanchett’s performance in Where’d You Go, Bernadette was one of the only parts of the film worth remembering, as it didn’t do so well at the box office. de Armas’ presence in Knives Out brought a certain level of charm to the movie. And Beanie Feldstein in Booksmart is a total riot. Though, Awkwafina’s performance in The Farewell deserves everything.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell

Annette Bening, The Report

Laura Dern, Marriage Story

Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers

Margot Robbie, Bombshell

Though Little Women hasn’t released yet, Florence Pugh was a noticeable snub on the nominations list. Her performance has been gathering quite a bit of hype. So, with her missing from the list, Laura Dern has quite the shot.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama

Christian Bale, Ford v Ferrari

Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory

Adam Driver, Marriage Story

Joaquin Pheonix, Joker

Jonathan Pryce, The Two Popes

At this point, all roads lead to Driver or Pheonix. And I’m not opposed to either. For the 2020 Golden Globes nominations, this is the one category where the nominees were pretty much all locks, but the odds of each winning might be 50/50.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Daniel Craig, Knives Out

Roman Griffin Davis, Jojo Rabbit

Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood

Taron Egerton, Rocketman

Eddie Murphy, Dolemite Is My Name

Remember when Rami Malek won everything for his role in a musical biopic? Well, despite Rocketman being considered a better movie, Taron Egerton hasn’t been receiving the same amount of praise, even though his performance is stellar. So, seeing him take a win would be nice. But going up against Leonardo DiCaprio is a tough one.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes

Al Pacino, The Irishman

Joe Pesci, The Irishman

Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood

Again, what a stacked list of talented actors. It’s hard to say who it’ll go to, but anyone is deserving.

Best Screenplay, Motion Picture

Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story

Bong Joon Ho & Han Jin Won, Parasite

Anthony McCarten, The Two Popes

Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood

Steven Zaillan, The Irishman

In an era of reboots, sequels, and adaptations, all of these scripts deserve praise for thinking outside of the box. Tarantino might just walk away with it, but it’s also still too soon to call.

Best Original Score, Motion Picture

Alexandre Desplat, Little Women

Hildur Gudnadottir, Joker

Randy Newman, Marriage Story

Thomas Newman, 1917

Daniel Pemberton, Motherless Brooklyn

Yes, Randy and Thomas Newman are related. They’re cousins. And talk about a talented family! Since not all of the films on this list have been released, it’s tough to say who will take it home. Though, so far, the competition is fierce.

Best Original Song, Motion Picture

“Beautiful Ghosts”, Cats

“I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” Rocketman

“Into the Unknown,” Frozen 2

“Spirit,” The Lion King

“Stand Up,” Harriet

Now is a good time to talk about what songs from 2019 films we’ve been listening to on repeat. Rocketman deserves something for making an original work so well in a film full of classic bops.

Best Motion Picture, Animated

Frozen 2

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The Lion King

Missing Link

Toy Story 4

For now, it’s likely going to be a showdown between Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4. Though, those dragons deserve some love, too.

Best Motion Picture, Foreign Language

The Farewell (United States)

Les Misérables (France)

Pain and Glory (Spain)

Parasite (South Korea)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (France)

For all of the well-deserved recognition that Parasite has been earning lately, it’s likely that the award will go their way.

The 2020 Golden Globes Nominations – Television

Best Television Series, Drama

Big Little Lies

The Crown

Killing Eve

The Morning Show

Succession

Congratulations to Apple TV+ on their first big nomination for The Morning ShowThis stacked list makes it hard to predict, but The Crown is always a safe bet for their great awards track record.

Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy

Barry

Fleabag

The Kominsky Method

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The Politician

Back at the Emmys, I made the mistake of underestimating Fleabag. It went on to win a handful of awards. Now that I’ve actually watched Fleabag, all of my votes go in that direction.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Catch-22

Chernobyl

Fosse/Verdon

The Loudest Voice

Unbelievable

We’re placing our bets on Chernobyl.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama

Jennifer Aniston, The Morning Show

Olivia Colman, The Crown

Jodie Comer, Killing Eve

Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies

Reese Witherspoon, The Morning Show

Claire Foy killed her performance in The Crown, but Olivia Colman has managed to take her own spin on the character and make it her own, while simultaneously honoring Foy’s job. Though, Jodie Comer’s sociopathic role in Killing Eve has also been making waves in Awards circles.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy

Christina Applegate, Dead to Me

Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Kirsten Dunst, On Becoming a God in Central Florida

Natasha Lyonne, Russian Doll

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag

Fleabag. That is all.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Kaitlyn Dever, Unbelievable

Joey King, The Act

Helen Mirren, Catherine the Great

Merrit Wever, Unbelievable

Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon

Another hard-to-predict category full of well-deserving women. Though Wever’s role in Unbelievable made the show what it is, and for that we think she may deserve the crown.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television

Patricia Arquette, The Act

Helena Bonham Carter, The Crown

Toni Colette, Unbelievable

Meryl Streep, Big Little Lies

Emily Watson, Chernobyl

Meryl Streep has been nominated for so many awards that sometimes it feels like it’s a given that she’ll win just because of who she is. Though, her role in Big Little Lies gave her a new story that felt tailor-made for her. So, go Meryl, go!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama

Brian Cox, Succession

Kit Harington, Game of Thrones

Rami Malek, Mr. Robot

Tobias Menzies, The Crown

Billy Porter, Pose

This is the point in the list where you remember that Game of Thrones has been eligible for awards and isn’t getting the nominations. Kit Harington being the only GoT nominee seems a bit odd. Though his performances have always been strong, it certainly wasn’t his best (or anybody’s best) season on the show. So, we aren’t quite sure who to predict here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy

Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method

Bill Hader, Barry

Ben Platt, The Politician

Paul Rudd, Living With Yourself

Ramy Youssef, Ramy

Paul Rudd got to play two unique characters (even though technically it’s the same character) in Living With Yourself. I’d go as far as saying that he played them each flawlessly. Though the world has been on a Bill Hader train for a while now, and him winning wouldn’t be undeserved.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Christopher Abbott, Catch-22

Sacha Baron Cohen, The Spy

Russell Crowe, The Loudest Voice

Jared Harris, Chernobyl

Sam Rockwell, Fosse/Verdon

This is another list where each performance is so different from the next. There certainly isn’t an obvious winner, and I can see a case for anyone winning.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television

Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method

Kieran Culkin, Succession

Andrew Scott, Fleabag

Stellan Skarsgard, Chernobyl

Henry Winkler, Barry

Despite Fleabag winning so much in the past, especially at the Emmys, Andrew Scott’s portrayal of Priest hasn’t gotten as much recognition. The show belongs to Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, but Scott plays such a unique character full of emotions and motivations that we think he deserves equal support.
