Star Wars actor John Boyega’s Anime choices provide a look into the actor’s geek life. With his latest Star Wars movie, Rise Of the Skywalker releasing in a matter of days, during promotions, Boyega discusses his love for anime. And provides insight into his own life as a fan and what Anime he reccomends to newcomers.

Geek Credentials Before And After Star Wars

The Star Wars actor came into the limelight with the indie film Attack The Block. The movie itself was also a niche movie about aliens attacking a small section of an inner city in South London. It was his debut film, as well director Joe Cornish.

The film was very much appreciated and has since become a cult-hit. But Boyega’s biggest claim to fame is the new Star Wars trilogy, beginning with The Force Awakens, directed by J. J. Abrams. The actor plays a former Stormtrooper for the First Order who deserts the group after witnessing their heinous actions.

Boyega’s Finn pairs up with Oscar Isaac’s Poe, and eventually ends up joining Daisy Ridley’s Rey in opposing the Order with the Resistance. And now he’s part of the new trio of Star Wars characters in the new trilogy, which ends in the new Rise Of The Skywalker.

John Boyega Recommends Some Anime For The Uninitiated

During promotions for Rise Of The Skywalker, Boyega appeared on a popular YouTube channel, First We Feast. One of the channel’s shows is Hot Ones where guests answers questions, while eating progressively spicier wings with each question. During the show, the host asked Boyega about his interest in Anime.

“Anime, I think because of its long-form format, so, it lasts for ages… you take something like Naruto for example. You literally watch a character grow up day by day, and then there are filler episodes that give you, kind of like, clarity on the world surrounding the leads, or the several different leads in the anime.”

He’s not wrong. The Naruto anime, in particular, first chronicles the journey of its young titular character from a boy who didn’t know who he was, to becoming one of the greatest leaders ever. The companion series of Boruto explored the exploits of his son, from a different angle; how a cocky and privileged boy had to find humility to become a leader like his father.

It’s interesting to see that an actor of Boyega’s calibre is as much a nerd about Anime as the rest of us.

John Boyega’s Anime Choices Are Some Of The Best Anime Out There

It’s also telling of John Boyega’s Anime street cred when he starts prattling off some of the names of Anime that he’s particularly interested in. And Boyega lists them as recommendations to others as a gateway to get into Anime. Boyega’s list includes Attack On Titan, Naruto, of course, and Hunter x Hunter. Boyega’s Anime list betrays his deep love for the medium, given how classic the franchises he mentioned are. Attack On Titan made our own Anime Guide here at Comic Years as well. Boyega mentions how his love for Anime even took him to Japan later on in the same show.

John Boyega will next be in the latest Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, releasing on December 20.
