The Kane Chronicles by young adult fantasy author Rick Riordan are coming to Netflix. The author has been working on a deal with the streaming company on an adaptation since last October. The Kane Chronicles is a YA fantasy trilogy that draws from Egyptian history and mythology. Riordan also wrote the highly popular Percy Jackson books that similarly draw from Greek mythology. That series is also currently in development with Disney+ as a tv series. This means that Riordan’s work will be coming to multiple streaming platforms. Let’s take a look at what we know about the upcoming adaptations.

Riordan’s book trilogy originally came out between 2010-2012. It includes the titles The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow. It follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane. They discover “that they are the most powerful Egyptian magicians to be born in hundreds of years. As the Egyptian gods begin to awaken, the siblings must fight the forces of Chaos in order to maintain Ma’at.”

Riordan is a former middle-school teacher who has spoken about how the most popular subjects in his social studies classes were Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. This informed his popular fantasy series for young adults in that age range. The multiracial heroes of Carter and Sadie were also inspired by some of his former students.

“They’re actually based on two siblings that I taught when I was in San Francisco. It’s hard enough to be a middle-school kid, because you’re dealing with so many facets of your identity—you’re changing socially, you’re changing physically, you’re changing emotionally, everything is in flux, and to put race on top of that as well and have to figure out your racial identity is extremely hard.”

Two Adaptations For Different Streaming Platforms

This is the first time that The Kane Chronicles will be adapted for screen. Riordan’s Percy Jackson series has been made into feature films before. However, the author has stated that he was not a fan of those adaptations. It is also interesting that The Kane Chronicles will be Netflix movies. But Percy Jackson will be a show on Disney+. Riordan wrote a crossover trilogy between the two series with the books The Son of Sobek, The Staff of Serapis, and The Crown of Ptolemy. Unfortunately due to the divide between the streaming platforms it is highly unlikely that a crossover event will happen between the Netflix movies and the Disney+ show.

We look forward to learning more about The Kane Chronicles on Netflix, and will update with more news as it comes. To stay up to date be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
